w2k and linux

I have windows 2000 only.can i install linux mandrake on same computer? if so how please
win xp pro AMD athlon T-bird 1.4mhz
512ram pc133.40 gig maxterHD,Geforce4 ti 4600 128meg,soho watch guard .Surfboard cable modem SB4100

Sure you can. It's called a dualboot.

You will need to creat another partition on the HD. Make it large enough for the os and whatever else you expect to save. You can use FDISK or Partition Magic or whatever you want. Then when you install linux choose the new partition for the install. I'm not sure if Mandrake has lilo but if it does DON'T install it. (it's a pain in the butt.. trust me)

Then you can edit the 2000 boot loader (or whatever they call it now, it used to be called NT boot loader) to show Windows 2000 and Linux at startup and set a time limit and the default OS. That's how you choose which OS you want to use and if the time runs out it will start the default OS for you.

These are pretty basic instructions... i'm at work and don't have my own computer in front of me to talk you through it. Sorry maybe someone can elaborate on these.

ok thanks for the help but i guess what i was asking was how to install it.dos prompt? also i have multiple partions already so thats not the problem.

reboot your computer with startup boot disks in your floppy drive and go from there. it should walk you through the process. let me know how it goes. once im done building my new computer later this year im thinking about doing a dualboot of 2K and Linux on my current one. Good luck

well ended up just buying the mandrake 8.0 have know idea what the f --- im doing. everything works but its a hole new animal !!
