Speed drop, Please help ??????

After adjusting my RWIN settings, I finally got speeds that were as good as I've ever been able to get(1200-1270kbps)for the past 3 months. However, over the past 2 weeks, my speeds have dropped by about 20-25
% to 850-950 and have no clue where to start.I've checked my speeds at various times during the day but get the slower speeds at all times. I called my isp and was told there has been no line or server problems. not sure what I can do.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Copy and paste it back here leave out your IP address.
How do you connect and if its PPPoE what software do you connect with.

Are caused by DHCP time in Windohs esp in win98 & SE/ME
Do this
Open control panel

Open Network

Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL and VPN type bindings).

Select it and press properties

Select IP address from the tab

Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 196.54.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively
This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".

Also if this is Win98SE do this

Here is a copy of the tesat you suggested.I use W/98 and have a bridged connection .As far as the "obtain IP address automatically" it is checked, but it has always been that way. Why would that suddenly cause my system to slow down? Will putting in those numbers screw things up or can I always remove them if it causes a problem?

I don't have a cable connection ,I have a DSL service through Bellsouth with a 'bridged connection' if that makes a difference.All the 'tweaks
' seem to be aimed for cble users.
If I'm incorrect here, please let me know which 'fix' or 'patch' would be best for me. my ISP say's top dowload speed is 1500 kbps.

Here's a copy from the test from that page. I have a DHCP bridged connection ,not a PPoe(not even sure what that means but was told by the person who installed my external ADSL modem) Any suggestions as I'm fairly lost when i look at the page as to which patch or fix i should try.Should I try putting in the values mentioned in the second post?

Also you will need this patch if on 95/98/SE
:Go to Speedguides tweaks here-below in my signature. Once on patch page you need Vtcp386 Fix
patch for your OS (Make sure you get right one) Download and install, reboot, and retest and do this please so I can make sure patch is in:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Thank you.

I'm sorry but ,as you can probably tell ,I'm new to all this tweaking and patches. What are the steps I should follow?(I have W/98 with a bridged connection if that makes any difference)
First you said I should download the sguide_tweak_98_ME tweak.
Now you mention the above including downloading the vtcp 386 patch(which has me very confused.I'm sorry.)
Could you break it down, 1st step,2nd, and so on?
I'm kind of confused now and I'd be very appreciative if you could explain the steps I need to take .

You need both, 1 is the patch and 2 allows scaling, allows your Default recieve window to get above 65535

Everything looks fine, it's not the best time of day for speed but there is another patch on patch page called Web patch for faster loading of web pages

I had to re-set my registry after my machine started acting up.
Should I go back and try all those patches again or should I set it to 64240,the lowest setting mentioned without the patches?
Also, I have a 'bridged' DHCP connection(at least that's what the bellsouth tech said).Should that figure into any of the sttings I use?

BertSki, It could your provider at this time is haveing proublems. Not your tweaks. This will cause a speed loss to if they are haveing proublems. I would check with them. Before changing your tweak settings if they were fine before. Hope this helps you out.!

They may have said they were not haveing problems. But most of the time One person my not no. When another will. Plus check all your connections and try rebuiding your net work settings. Some times this helps to.

How would I go about checking and rebuilding my network settings???

Maybe our patch did not work so try Cablenuts as all his RWIN numbers are below 65535, do this:
Go to [url=http://www.Cablenut.com,]www.Cablenut.com,[/url] Download 4.0 and 4.02. 4.02 updates 4.0. Cablenuts patch will uninstall prior patches before applying his.

On desktop will be a Cablenut 4.0 folder, click on this folder, select ccs, then select
PPPoE/DSL (select your ccs file-settings)
Select normal settings
This will bring up adjuster, blank boxes just mean default values are being used, click on save to registry at bottom and REBOOT for it to work, Please check back for updates or reading. Before coming back, do this please: take our TCP/IP Analyzer test at top of Tweak Forum page so I can be sure patch is in.

At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Thank you.
If you installed the Web patch (Faster loading of web pages) you have to install it again as Cablenuts patch uninstalled it prior to installing his, all you have to do is go where you unzipped it to and click on it and reboot. Those who do not have patch go to main page this site, patch page go down until you see the one for your OS and download and install. Thank you
W2k users only-(NOTE: If you change RWIN size number you must change GlobalmaxWindosize to the same number)
Also you have to experiment to see which settings work best for you, normal or fast cable settings, I have seen people with 400 CPU get better speed with fast settings. If it does not work for you, go back to normal cable settings.
(NOTE) inside Cablenut 4.0 folder on desktop it says adjuster if you click on 4.0 on desktop. RIGHT click on adjuster and select shortcut to desktop, same with reboot.

Check back often for updates

Ok if you want to rebuild your network settings. Go into the controll panel and under The network Icon. Remove your cards adapter.Plus anyother protocols that are listed. If you are networked write down the protocols you may have use for your networking. Then reboot your machine and let it pick back up your card ok. Then when it ask for the drivers use the floppy or cd that came with it. Plus have your os cd ready . It may ask for it to. It will do all its own binding to the card you don't have to. If you are not running a network and do not want the login. Remove Client for microsoft network. If it ask for your os cd .stick it in the rom. Then it will ask you to reboot do so. This should rebuild a basic cable and dls setup network. Good Luck! If you are networking you will have to add the protocols you were useing and use your os cd again. If you use a dynamic Ip do not setup a stactic or you will keep disconnecting. Leave it the way it rebuilds it self. It will pickup if you are useing a dynamic Ip and set you up right. Let me know if this works!

As far as the suggestions you made,it seems as though it comes up with an page with a bunch of values to be filled in? Does 4.0 and 4.02 fill those needed values in?Also, what does 'css' refer to and what do I apply that to? Also, I don't think I have a PPPoE connection.As mentioned above,I have a bridged,DHCP connection.Does that make any difference and if so,what should I put in ?

It should not! It will just rebuild it self to you connection. The same way it did in the begaining! GoodLuck! But DlS can be picky. The most you might have to do if I remember right is let them know you rebuilt the network. Sometimes it go smooth and other times it don't. But most usely windows knows what you need for the network!
