How do you use Wake-on-LAN?

Post by Alien »

I have this with a 3com NIC of mine, but don't have a clue as to how to use it!

I'd like to be able to turn my computer on at home while I'm at work! Is this possible? Or how is it used?

Im not sure that you can do that. You can use a program like PCAnywhere to access files on your computer when it is on the internet from anywhere else.
Windows has not yet detected a keyboard. Press any key to continue.

Do what, turn your computer on remotly?

If it's not possible, why is there a connection for it on many motherboards, and the option provided on many high-end NICs?

Maybe I'm just confused on what it is/does. Could somebody clairify?

Yeah, you can turn on the pc remotely Matt :) Do you have the Wake On Lan Cable attached to the Motherboard? I haven't done this in years, but if I remember correctly, I THINK that you need to know the MAC address of the NIC and then ping it. Someone correct me of I am wrong? :)

Read this for a better understanding of how it works:

www.networking.ibm.com/eji/ejiwake.html

One more thing:

The NIC or Mobo will usually come with the software that allows you to Wake the computer and allow you to access it.
