I need a new PSU

Post by Easto »

I can't confirm I need one but, I'm getting random shutdowns in the middle of the night if I leave my computer on. There seems to be no pattern to these shutdowns in the Event Viewer and most articles I'm reading regarding "Kernel-Power, Event ID 41, Task Category: (63)" suggest replacing the PSU. Since a new PSU was on my list of items I've wanted for a new build I figure just get it now, install it in my current rig and move it over to a new rig once built. My current PSU is approximately 10+ years old and has served me well, and it's probably about time even if it isn't the cause of this problem.

Is your computer connected to a UPS? Battery/circuitry in those is sometimes flaky after a few years too.

The last few PSUs I've used were SeaSonic FOCUS, always lasted many years for me.
If I were to get one today, I'd get something like this one: https://amzn.to/4tqQPum (850 Watt)
There is also a 1000W one for not much more, but depends on your usage/video card draw, it may be an overkill: https://amzn.to/4tSjFEr

The power efficiency rating is "only" 80+ Gold, but the 80+ "Platinum" series prices seem double/out of whack for some reason.

Thanks for the ideas on replacements.

No UPS. The shutdowns are all random date intervals and times so I know it's not a scheduled systems reboot or something like that. I don't mind spending a bit more for quality PSU. Also, there will be no big GPU draw since whatever I put in will be several generations old. Heck, I might just keep the one I have now (Radeon RX 570).
