Good Morning Starshine!

Post by PsykoPenguin »

The earth says hello!

It's been a long time. I've been places, seen things, gotten jobs with Lockheed Martin and Philip Morris! IT Related stuff. Even had a 3 year stint with a local MSP and a 7 month stint with another local MSP. Exciting things

Moved from CA to CO.

Hopped on because I was looking for information for a PFA (cancer) lawsuit, I recalled posting bout it here, got some info and figured I'd stop by and say hello! Hope all is well with y'all!

I see y'all moved on over the phpbb, when did that happen? I assume recently.

My dog is going on 14 years old this year, still alive and kickin. Still comes on hikes with me and plays fetch, not a spring chicken anymore but she's still got some kick. I dont recall if I ever posted bout her here though, think I did.

Hi Psyko, good to hear from you, it's been a minute indeed!

Glad your career is doing well. I have another friend in IT that moved away from CA after 15+ years recently, he's in TX now though. He didn't like CA taxes much I suppose, heh.

Moved to PhpBB probably a year ago now, as the old vB forums don't play well with PHP 7 and PHP 8... PhpBB also has more modern mobile-first default theme. The conversion worked ok for the most part, minus some old signature html code and attachments may have been lost in the process. Moved the site to a new server two weeks ago as well, much faster hardware, 2ea. AMD EPYC processors, NVME SSDs in RAID1, plenty of RAM, modern Linux distro, etc. A few of the old-time regulars still stop by, forums have slowed down, but all is well.

Hey Philip, glad to see you're still around and Thanks! Yeah CA just kept getting more and more expensive while the wages remained stagnant and taxes got higher. Didn't help that I lived 40 minutes to 1hr+ away from LA (depending on the part of LA)

I remember the good ol days when I had lots of free time and used to play around a lot with forum software, sql and php. So you couldn't go the upgrade path to the latest version of vB or was there no upgrade path from that old version you had? Or did you just decide to move away from vB? I never got around to playing with vB much. phpBB was my jam. Glad to see the migration largely went smooth.

What was the old server specs vs the new specs?

That's unfortunate that forums slowed down, but I guess that's kind of how things go. It's pretty rare that I participate in forums, most things have gone to discord.

How's life been for you, anything exciting in these past few years?

Are the mad ones still loitering around?

Side note, i got diagnosed with Autistic ADHD like 4 years ago, explains quite a lot of my perks I have.

The old versions of vB (vB4) had a lifetime license option that we had, then the company got bought and moved to annual license structure, some type of cloud hosting, and the software changed a lot visually, the database changed, many plugins didn't work either. phpBB being a community software seemed like a more natural upgrade path than being locked to a proprietary software/licenses. The old vB version was one of the biggest hurdles in upgrading to a more modern version of OS/PHP/SQL.

Running two primary servers currently actually (and a backup third one that is slated to be retired). Specs for the servers are listed on that page, check the top two servers: https://www.speedguide.net/stats.php
All run some Linux Fedora Core version.

SG and the forums is the biggest site, running on the top server on that page. The second server in that list runs some websites and mail services I host for other businesses/people, and some proprietary technical indicators/stuff I play with related to the stock market, mainly python, php, sql.

Life is fine, my two daughters grew up, one of them just started in NYU, and I am currently up in NYC this week helping her get situated, will get back to FL on the weekend.

Sorry to hear about the ADHD. I personally feel like many of us have some mild "disorders" that weren't even labeled last century/millennia, heh. I know I have some OCD moments, even without a formal diagnosis.

MadDoc still stops by, Easto is around, Mark, TonyT and a few of the other old-timers too :)
