RTX 5090

Post by Easto »

Wow, I'm sure glad I'm not into gaming any more. I can't believe how much these things cost. How does some young kid who likes to game have $2k - $3k for a video card?

They don't, heh, unless they have money from a side hustle, or a Youtube channel, discord followers, family, etc.
The most expensive cards I bought were close to 1k, but I used them for crypto mining, so that they paid for themselves in less than 6 months.
I have a RTX3080 in my rig now, I liked the RTX3070 better actually, half the power consumption for slightly lower performance.

Although my next build is still probably over a year away, I have no real interest in gaming and I could only see myself buying something at $500 or less. And the only reason I'd pay close to that was to ensure a solid product that was going to last years.

I was encoding some old TV shows in x265 HEVC, and just switching to the appropriate NVDIA codec vs the default one gave me like 3x encoding boost, 3x reduction in time, even though my CPU is pretty good (Ryzen 9 7900).
