poinsettia left over from xmas,we have some in the yard from last xmas.

Amazed they last that long.
Preaching to the choir my friend, but be careful w/ them as they're very bad/lethal for dogs that eat them.

Have done 105 mph to pick up a poisoned dog before..not fun or safe.

I know you cherish your pets and they're family. Maybe she's one you know would never chew on the plant itself, never met her. Just mentioning out of caution.

Nothing against cats, they're awesome in their own ways.
But IMO dogs are the sh*t and cats, well, they're just cats.

No one in my immediate family has even had a cat for 70+ years, but dozens of dogs.
At one point, between my parents, sister, and me, we had 12

Now I have 5 (including girlfriend's 1), my sister has 2 (down from 5), my father has 1 (down from 2).

I actually like both cats and dogs, and there are no clear indications of which one is smarter. Cats are more independent than dogs, and in a survival situation they tend to do much better than dogs. Dogs have a larger dependency on humans, however that does not mean they are less intelligent than cats, as dogs are much better at interacting and utilizing humans than cats.

I have to go with the "pro-dog" side of this discussion. I've worked with animals most of my life and there's no question which of these 2 I prefer! Cats are great, no doubt, but they are generally so aloof and stand-offish unless they want you for warmth or to clean out their litter box.

Dogs, on the other hand, have earned their place in this world. How many seeing eye cats have you heard of? How many rescue cats have made the news? How many felines become cops as K-9's do? How many cats have died to save their people? How many cats protect their families with their very lives?

Nope, cats are nice, but I'll take dogs any day of the week.

Fur down folks

We all know dogs are better than cats (just my opinion).
Not saying they make better pets or are more capable of love or companionship, that's up to the individuals involved.

In terms of their practical worth in aiding their people, I think *most* cats can outdo *most* dogs in small critter control, hands down.
In doing so they've made a huge contribution as far as pest control throughout Europe and the US.
Beyond that I'm reaching, but I feel dogs have shown more practical use for aiding their people.
Livestock control, protection, deterrence and warning, service dogs, search and rescue, tracking.
My opinion. I don't think anyone is trying to debunk anyone else's.

Not to downplay felines, I know and respect many, and know and respect their people, the relationship, and their love for their pets.
Power to them.
One thing I admire about cats is their relative independence. Must be nice.

As stated, myself, I'm a dog person. Known many cats but if given the choice would and have always chosen dogs.

Humboldt, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have nothing against cats at all. I have one now (his name is Little *****, cuz he is one) and a few years ago I had the sad chore of putting down my Monster cat who was born into my hands at the clinic where his mother was dumped and spent his entire 17 years by my side.

He got the name Monster because out of the litter of 12, he gave us techs the biggest fight when it came time to trim his nails and I was the only one who could handle him. With a litter that size, and in such close quarters, kitten nails need to be kept blunt. Whenever it was time for that job, invariably, someone would come to me with the baby clippers and ask, "You want to go take care of that little monster?"

All that being said, I grew up with Golden Retrievers and since I could walk and read I've poured myself into studying dogs. There's a lot of stuff I don't know, but dogs? I KNOW dogs.
