Win2K with Linksys

Post by Darkwraith »

Damn..it's been a long time since I've posted on Speedguide, nice to be here again Image I'm hoping that someone can assist me in figuring out my problem. The problem that I'm having is that I upgraded one of my LAN machines to Win2K the other day and experienced the following error. When I boot up the machine and launch Internet Explorer I get the message box "No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer , click Work Offline. Click Try again to attempt to connect." When I click "Try again" It connects and opens up the homepage without a problem. I'm using @home as my provider networked through a Linksys BEFSR41 router. I have a static WAN IP setup and all the clients on my LAN are also setup statically. This setup worked (and works) flawlessly under Windows98. This problem also persists while utilizing DHCP so I've narrowed it down to the Win2K system as being the problem. I'm just wondering if there's something that I'm doing wrong to make Win2K bring up that popup error. All the DNS server and suffix info is input correctly into the LAN info. And the computer name and workgroup are also fine. If anyone has any insight as to how I can rectify this problem I would appreciate it.

LOL

This topic has been mulled over many times. I have the same problem. I use a dedicated server to share my cable connection. Ever since sharing it, the infamous "Try Again" box appears whenever a client is restarted. Doesn't seem like anyone knows how to terminate this damn box.

BTW, welcome back. Image

heh, Thanks for the responsce glc1 Image I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in experiencing this problem. Hopefully someone will be able to provide some suggestions regarding this. I've posted this on other forums without results. This place(speedguide.net) however has always been a good resource for troubleshooting Image

Same problem here. Win2k must be the problem. I upgraded the Linksys BIOS to 1.36, and it made no difference. I have 4 workstations 95, 98, NT, and Win2k. The Win2k machine is the only one with the "Try again" problem. If I stumble upon a fix, I will share the info!

Taking a wild shot in the dark here, but if the Linksys provides NAT services, are you still specifying a "proxy" under IE's internet connection options? And if not, try specifying one. I got my dsl gateway in the mail today (and I'm at work, so I cannot wait to go home and plug it in Image ), but until now, I have been sharing a dial-up using winproxy (also provides NAT) and I remember getting that "try again" box depending on those settings. Another thing you might want to test out is what options you have for your nic for gateway and dns server values. Again, this might be a shot in the dark, but perhaps worth a try.

Fixed my problem.
Reloaded Win2k SR1 and IE 5.5.
Before all this started, I was having an IRPStackSize error. I searched Microsofts web site for the error, but had no success. Since I have Norton antivirus 2000, I gave them a try. Here is the fix for the IRP error:
Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\\Parameters
Modify IRPStackSize
Change the base to DECIMAL.
In the value box, type in 11. Close regedit.

Once this problem was solved, I then reinstalled Win2k SP1 and IE 5.5 and all security patches.
The "Try again" problem disappeared.
I know that this may not be exactly your problem, but you never know!
Good luck
