Slow speed culprits found...but now..what to do?

I recently upgraded my service to 30mb (W.O.W.) and could not get anywhere near that speed on the xp laptop, the best was about 15mb. the macbook pro did 30 plus. turns out it seems to be the Avast and Zone alarm I'm running on the XP machine causing the slowdown. are there tweeks for these programs to speed things up? Or other programs i should look at? I really don't want to run on the net without decent protection. I've tried a few others before and they really slowed things up in the computer (not even online) any suggestions?
