vpn with netgear router

Post by besmart »

I have netgear model DG834G (wireless+ modem router)
the router is connected to my PC (windows xp sp2) at home

i want to make vpn with the router and my labtop (windows xp) using usb wireless connection and connect to my pc.

i googled and find that i should buy software and instal it on my labtop to make vpn connection.

q1: can i make vpn without that software?
q2, if yes , can you point me to step by step method to make the vpn.

Well, first..what is your reason for trying to do a VPN? A VPN may not be the best solution for your needs.
You hope to access this home computer from out on the internet?

thanks for reply
Sure if i can avoid vpn (due to its overhead) , it is good.

i have a client/ server application running on the laptop/desktop machine.

The server windows 2000 at home (which is connected to the router DG834G ) is running oracle database.
The application should connect to the server database over ADSL connection.
i used teamviewer software as a quick tool for vpn connection , but the connection is very slow and ping may be 750 up to 1500 ms.
I need your advice for the best practice to run the client/server application over ADSL line.
