A girl I work with had jury duty

Post by Easto »

Let me just say she did not want to be there. Anyway, she gets into work quite late this evening and tells me (I totally believe her) that she was picked and got as far as being questioned by a judge. She told the Judge she didn't know why she was being forced to be there, that her work does not reimburse her for this lost time and she didn't really want to be there. The judge told her that is she didn't quiet down he would find her in contemp. She told him to "go ahead" and then said "I'm actually thinking of going out and commiting a felony so that I don't ever have to come back and do this again"

I was amazed. She did say that the judge wanted her back again tomorrow.

Actually if you knew her you'd be laughing your head off. She's this sweet 30 y/o girl (married) who wouldn't harm a fly. As polite as hell. Responds in the office with nothing but kindness.

When she was telling us this story we were all just sitting there with our jaws on the floor asking her if she really said that. We all told her how lucky she was to not be in jail.

Well she should understand why she was there for jury duty. And that it sucks for most people, shes not the only one that doesn't get reimbursed or fully reimbursed. Its a duty, and responding like that to a judge is just rude.

She definitely wasn't polite or considerate at the court house and should be happy she wasn't found in contempt.

ugg can't stand jury duty... I'll go but I'm hoping I don't get chosen cause yeah you don't get paid much for it and depending on the case it can be a disturbing event. Wife came home once from a case she was sitting in that had to do with bad child abuse along with many other things - she cried for hours after she got home.

I avoid jury duty as much as possible. I do have to agree with Sava that I don't really feel comfortable with my wife having to sit on a jury and be exposed to events that some deviant perpetrated on society. I'm not saying she should live her life with her head in the sand but I do think that a judge should take into consideration how people may react to very distressing evidence. Maybe sue the court for PTSD?

maybe..but then they would say you could have said something to get excluded then you have people complaining to say its their duty to serve. Today's jury system doesn't work the same, too much information and ways to get it prior to someone serving. Nobody as you put it has their head in the sand now - I believe the jury system needs to be reviewed and changed to stay with the times.

She sounds naive. She doesn't want the Judge to hold her in contempt even if she thinks she does.

I got $10 once from two days of jury pooling, parking cost me $16. :(
