Having trouble transfering files via switch.

Post by Bababooey »

I have a gigabit switch that I transfer files between my desktop and laptop at home and it works fine. The problem is trying to transfer files between computers that I use at work.

At home both devices are on workgroup and I use Win7 and XP SP3, at work we are on a domain and we use XP SP3. After I set up the ip's and subnet I can ping the ip's but I can't ping the device names and thus cannot map a share drive to transfer files. I am doing exactly what I do at home but I'm thinking being on a domain changes the procedure, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

You can access shares via IP addresses, you do not need the netbios names.

The trickier part will be dealing with share permissions and accounts from the computers that are setup on a domain.

I absolutely second this. Additionally, MMC will do the job but you need an Administrator access to the Domain Controller to be able to create shares to map to.
