New project Minimal install of Debian Linux in a Virtual Machne

Post by Shinobi »

Trying to install Debian Linux in a Virtual Machine (Sun Virtual Box) with only 64 MB allocated for memory and 8 GB of hard space.

I'll try to use some light Windows Managers like Blackbox, Fluxbox or LXDE and see how it runs.

64 megs only, you meanie.

Damn Small Linux has run on even less than that and its based on debian I believe, so you should have little troubles.

64 MB memory will work just fine for Blackbox, even Fluxbox. n LXDE will run better with a bit more memory. And 8 GB is plenty of space to for the install. Just make 2 partitions, a 128 MB swap and /.

Better yet, take the plunge and put Deb on a drive.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

Thanks... I'm install all of this on that Dell pentium 4, it has Windows xp on it and I use that for recording songs that I write (some of the music apps do not have an Linux equivalent yet) so I thought it would be interesting if I could put a small Linux Virtual Machine on top of Windows XP. This box only had 521 MB of memory.

I really like Blackbox, Fluxbox, and Openbox for window manager's as of late, as they use low resources. There are a few console based apps that I am also going to install..

Have you tried Puppy linux yet, it likes to run entirely in the ram and older versions can run on 64mb by defualt...I just put the most current version of it on a semi-up-to-date dual core laptop I have with 2 GB of ram and it absolutely flies. It runs great in VM's as well.

If I had a system that I did not have a hard drive, I would try Puppy Linux... ....actually I may download that today just to try it on my laptop to see how it is.

You can still install it to any hard drive to free up the cd drive...that's what I did. It just uses the hard drive to store the settings file.

I tried it and it is very fast.. I like IceWM but I would rather use Fluxbox or even change between Fluxbox and Blackbox... Puppy Linux has issues with both.
