What tech would it take to make a real lightsaber?

Was reading this article on Dailytech

And it made me wonder what kind of technology (either available or future tech) it would take to make a true lightsaber...and how the heck would you make the light only shoot out the length of the blade and then stop...forcefield technology?

I may very well buy one of these things as we get closer to xmas.. many different things it could benefit.

Lucas probably got involved mostly because of the way it looks. I looked into the company some (http://www.wickedlasers.com) and their other products looked like superduper laser pointers.



I wouldn’t mind having one but at $334.93 that’s not going to happen.
