Setting up Domain Controller

Post by TeddyTed »

Hello all I need a bit of help getting acquainted with setting up a Active directory.
I'm basically using old test machines (and virtual machines) installing Server 2000 for this project. But eventually I've got to install a DC on a small network for someone.

From all of the tutorials / instructions I've read, this should be pretty simple.

Here's the scenario:
According to this site: http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_install_active_directory_on_w2k.htm
After installing active directory, the 4 SRV record folders does NOT show up in the DNS console.
I've done this probably about 10 time and only got it to work one time.

According to the tutorial, the result should like like this :
See pic :

However, I keep getting the following :
I went through the troubleshooting process and the 4 folders just won't get created. I'm not sure which step i'm missing.

Thanks for any advice.

Is your TCP/IP set correctly? The server is using its own IP address as its one and only DNS server?

If i remember correctly, i've tried using it's own IP address, as well as using the outside DNS address.
I can do another test run tonight to be sure this is not where i've been messing up.
So it MUST be the it's own address right ?

Thanks,

- TB

Without question..a domain controller MUST use its own IP address (or the IP of another domain controller on the same network)....using your router or your ISPs DNS will break active directory, DNS will not function properly, thus active directory will not function properly.

Also workstations (clients) MUST use the IP of your domain controller as their DNS server, not your router and not your ISPs DNS servers.

This is an old article I did, but mostly remains true

Gotcha !! maybe that's the part i didn't pay enough attention to.
I'll run a new virtual machine tonight and if it works well, I'll rebuild the physical machine which i'm preparing for the DC.

Hey, quick question....
This is small network of about 15 or 18 workstation; if you were doing this setup, would you worry about purchasing a copy of server 2k3 to use as a DC, or would you just use the old server 2k?
There's already a Windows 2003 database server on the network. Although server 2k is being phased out soon, i didn't think it's a must at this moment to spend the money. do you agree ?

Thanks YOSC ! you were exactly correct. I wasn't using the DC own IP address for DNS.

Thanks ! your advice is always solid.

Glad it worked. I'd use 2K3r2 over 2K. Why not get 2K8r2?

yeah, i was thinking of suggesting purchasing 2008 Server for the DB server, and then using the copy of 2003 Server on the domain controller, but i didn't want the force them to spend extra money.
I'll see what i can do.
Would it be difficult to migrate Active directory from the 2k box to a new 2k3 box later on ?
