Iron Cross

Post by Humboldt »

Another item passed on to me from my grandfather via my mother.

1914 German Iron Cross of some sort. Just starting to research it but it looks closer to the Class 2 example shown here http://www.worldwar1.com/sfgcross.htm than Class 1. Haven't found an exact match online, may have been retouched?

Not seeing anything else solid black except for the paper weights shown here: http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-med ... _cross.htm but they're very different.

I know my grandfather managed to enlist underage, went to Europe and fought in WWI, came home and found his father had died...so he went back to Europe and fought some more until the war ended.

How he got this I have no clue but given how much time he spent in combat over there I assume he either traded for it or took it off someone himself.

Shot of tattoo ( I know, set down pipe and beer and food)?

Never heard of a surfer cross, I know the pattern is popular though.

it's on my right lower leg about 4x4",

I've always liked the iron or (surfer) cross design.

it has a little different look, maybe a little Renaissance ?

it's also a cover up for a very old lame tattoo
