two 9800 GX2's a crankin'

Post by David »

I hit my first 10,000 point day! The set up took a bit of effort, however the results are demonstrable.

Way to go David.

I had 2 of them crankin' before my fire, and they do put out the points. Getting 4 GPU's crankin should get you near 20,000 ppd when they settle down.

I had to throw on the brakes..... The heat was hitting 96 degrees C in an open case. I am open to some cooling suggestions.

Go to the http://www.evga.com website and become a member by registering your cards. Then you can goto http://www.evga.com/precision and download a program that allows you to peg your card(s) fan speed at 100% which should drop temps by 10-15 C. It will also alow you to increase/decrease GPU MHz as well as increse/decrease memory speed.

Also as an afterthought, I placed a spacer inbetween my cards to hold them about a half inch apart. Used a couple of plastic ram cases until I can find something better.

Rickoic,

I had the fans pinned at 100% and the cards are a couple of slot widths apart. The issue might be the proteins they were working on, poor air flow in the cabinet (questionable) or the 680a processor on the motherboard which does run hot.

For now I am throttling back.... until I have it all figured out.

Might try getting a usb fan that you can aim on the mb and graphics cards that will circulate the air better.

I am going to pickup some dryer hose at the local Home Depot and run it with a fan between the cards. In addition, I will be pulling a couple of hard disks to further reduce the heat.

I have managed to keep the heat down, but can only do so with one board running....

Amazing the numbers I have been getting with only box running.

What's the room temp?

Is the mb inside a case, or in the open air?

It is in an open case, but in a cabinet... Froo froo stuff for the missus. However, I have a 12cm fan connected to a dryer hose that draws fresh air. The one gx2 runs at about 79c, which is acceptable. The temps jump into the 90's with both card going, and lock ups occur. Hopefully, I will be able to place the box in to basement and route the necessary cables up into the office. It would make for a quieter environment and permit even more aggressive cooling techniques.

Alas, my work box is down. No 4870's crunching.... not they did all that much.

For now, I am pleasantly surprised with just the one card.

You might try and reversing the fan so that it blows fresh air instead of draws it. That way the fresh air would go directly where you wanted it instead of drawing from all around the end of the hose.

... and David, she has been run over so many times she has hinges on her heels. A mattress on her back. A coin meter on her belt. Those are not bruises. Those are physical anomalies that are being treated with a combination of medications at the NCID.

Wait... that would be my wife or sister. Darn! Now I have to do the phone sex thing to figure out who-is-who!

You speak from experience? And to David's point, age has already done that. What I have (and 2" is sad) does not work without the aid of a toothpick down the middle. Said toothpick tends to detract from the joys of the sexual experience (short as it may be).

Do not wag a tongue of false modesty in my direction, you barnyard lothario! All too many mammals have been lulled by the sight of your Derringer. Unbeknownst to them, the incredibly condensed corpus canvernosa. With the mere tickle of the glans, the MadDoctor transforms the toothpick to an oriface punishing caber.

Keep your distance lads..... Whaling songs have been warbled to this man's prowess.
