4 laptop to 1 router

Post by shrinath_m2 »

I have a typical situation here :

I have 4 laptops ( i'll call them L1, L2, L3, L4 respectively )
I have a wifi router, lets say I've to pay to use it..
Per connection it is, say, 2$.. Now I want to save money and I'll get only 1 connection. But I am also greedy, so I want internet on all laptops.. :D
I dont want the owner to find out, so I'll not try connecting laptops with lan..

Now if the above scenario is to be solved, is it possible? ( I am not tryin to cheat anyone.. coffee shop owner is my friend and I've challenged him i'd do this.. so wanted to know if it could be done )

I thought of a solution as this :
1. I'd connect L1 to router
2. Get a usb wifi router and connect it to L1
3. make L2, L3, L4 to access L1 through usb wifi and share the internet..

does that work?

thank you :)

Hmm or you can create an ad hoc netwrok! Hi and I am new to these forums and I just posted a similar problem but its abotu portforwarding. Well what you can do is have L1 connected via cable and make your other laptops connect to the laptop and share the internet via ad hoc.

Ad Hoc networkign is basically a direct computer to computer wifi networking without a router in between.

So the plan is:

L1 Connect to the internet via cable

L2/L3/L4 Connect to L1 for internet

Problem Solved =D

Now your most probably wondering HOW?

Here you go =). This should help. And may actually help me aswell =D.

thanks dude, but there is a small glitch here.. I've to show my friend that I dont need to use any physical connections here.. so no cable business anywhere.. no cables will be available..
thanks for a detailed reply though :)

No Problem =). I actually found a semi solution to my prob aswell (its semi because i am not sure if it works =P). But I have the same concern as you. I want one computer to be in both the networks the adhoc one and the router one for internet. I m gonna try something and if it works i'll post it up on my own thread and this one =D

You could use your own wifi router. If you had a wifi router that supports dd-wrt firmware you could set it up not as a router but as a client. As a client it connects to the access point. Then you could wire all 4 laptops to it and dhare the connection. The sccess point won't even know that your laptops are connected to it, all it will know is that one client is connected, the dd-wrt client.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

Sounds perfect scene
But what is this "dd-wrt" thing?
I'll try to google it out, but it'd be better if someone who knows better could guide me :)

thanks tony :)

DD WRT is a Linux based firmware for routers. You'd want to use the Repeater (not Repeater Bridge) mode. It will essentially "repeat" the neighboring network and then your laptops connect to the Repeater. The WRT54GL is a good choice and costs around $60.

Compatible Routers

WRT54GL (the Defacto hack router)

Best performing 802.11g (but tricky to flash) WHR HP G54

Setup the Repeater in DD WRT

But use WPA AES encryption

Use Repeater and not repeater bridge or the guy will see all 4 laptops instead of 1 router client.
