DSL slow, speed test fine

Okay, I have DSL with PPPoE, advertised at 3 Mbps (says on bellsouth's site that there's a bare minimum acceptable speed of 700 Kbps) but only reaching around 250-300 Kbps most of the time, and it never goes over 400; I suppose I might as well mention that if I open up the Connection Status thing, it says it's getting 100 Mbps(:eek

, and if I do any online speed test it will say it's getting 2.5 to 3 Mbps. The OS is Windows Vista. The TCP Analyzer is displaying my router's IP instead of the computer's IP (I don't know if it's supposed to do that or not) and I can't get the MTU on that page to change. My router should be a Westell C90-327w30-06; if there's a way to change the router's MTU in its configuration thing, I can't find it. Here's the info from the Analyzer:

Try the following with TCP Optimizer and see if MTU will change :

Some things changed, some didn't. Um, on the first one I forgot to mention I had disabled the auto tuning, I re-enabled it and tried what you said, nothing at all changed, so I disabled it and did it all again. Some posts and comments on the site seem to be saying it's best to disable, others say leave it on, so I just put it back where it was when we started.

MTU: 1392

MTU for PPPoE is 1492. Log into your modem and set it to 1492, MSS 1452 (if any), save & reboot , then post new TCP Analyzer.

BTW, auto-tuning should be enabled.

Okay, so after several more hours of searching, I can't find the MTU setting on the modem's configuration page; the online manual didn't have that information either. I think I called it a router earlier, not sure if routers are different from modems. Auto-tuning is now enabled.

The computer's been directly connected to the modem from the beginning. I mean, the modem's the flat one with a cord that goes to the phone jack and an ethernet cable that goes to the computer, right? A tech guy here once called it a router, but it's the only thing between the computer and the phone jack, so I think it must be the modem. I don't know how I can connect it any more directly than it already is.

Go to WAN settings and see if there are MTU and MSS. You will need to click "Next" button until get the MTU page.

Reboot comp and post a new TCP Analyzer report. Then test modem/router signal by doing a tracert yahoo.com

Hmm. I don't see a next button. Okay I guess I'll describe what I'm seeing on the WAN page, only thing I know to do.

At the top there's a drop down box labeled "WAN PORT" and it's set to "DSL ATM PORT," if I try to set it to the other option (ETHERNET PORT 1) it says it will disable my DSL. Under the drop down box are several rows, each with an enable/disable drop down box, "VPI" and "VCI" numbers, and each row has a Protocol that's either PPPoE or Bridge. The only row that has the box set to enabled also has the Protocol set to PPPoE. Each row has its own edit button. And then there are three boxes at the bottom labeled "Bridge Broadcast," "Bridge Multicast," and "Spanning Tree Protocol;" all of those are checked except the last one.

Clicking on the PPPoE's edit button does not lead to a page with the MTU settings.

The tracert completed, didn't say anything that sounded unusual, just a list of IP addresses and milliseconds.

Oh one more thing, I said earlier it was DSL with PPPoE. There are several settings on the router/modem's configuration page that say PPPoE, but if I go to configure connection it says the connection type is "Always On." I'm just mentioning it because some of the things I've read recently seemed to be contrasting PPPoE with always on.

It seems that your MTU is limited by modem/router !

Okay, sorry for double posting but it doesn't seem right to make the previous one any longer than it is.

I have two or three network cards in my computer (for whatever reason) and I noticed that when I went to netsh interface ipv4, blah blah, it showed the one I was using as having 1400 mtu but the others had 1500. I plugged the ethernet cable into a different card, and now the mtu on the analyzer says 1492 instead of 1392. Also I updated the drivers on all three cards before this. However, the RWIN and such are still not optimized.

The ISP is Bellsouth, I can't remember why I put the aol stuff on there but it's kind of difficult to get rid of sometimes. The Westell is sitting next to a completely unplugged phone, could that cause it? No coiled cables. Also, a Bellsouth tech guy installed this thing that connects from the Westell to the electrical socket and allows my family to connect other computers to the internet using a similar looking thing. Let me see what it is... okay it's a Netgear Wallplugged Ethernet Extender Kit, I think.

Uninstall AOL programs and use Hijackthis to check and fix all entries of AOL.

Then clean your comp registry with CCleaner.

It says I'm a little over 3 Mb/s, but if I use any sort of program to download an actual file, whether it's a game I paid for on Steam, or just something I clicked to download in my browser, it always hovers around 250 Kbps. I don't know what IDM is.

Oh wait, I thought I had gotten rid of all the AOL stuff, but there's this one "AOL Connectivity Service" that seems to still be there. I uninstalled it, rebooted, deleted its folder, rebooted, stopped and disabled it, rebooted, it's still there.

Update: I found another AOL folder, deleted it, and there don't seem to be any more AOL entries in HijackThis. Download speed is the same as ever.

Wait, wait... can someone confirm if the problem I'm having here is a math/measuring problem rather than a connection problem, haha? Like getting my bits mixed with my bytes I mean. Just had a sneaking suspicion, hopefully its wrong though, would be great to improve my speed some.

Final edit: Awww man. Apparently Steam and Firefox are measuring the speed in Kilobytes per second, and the speedtests are measuring it in Megabits per second. Thought the speedtests were measuring in Megabytes. Oh well, sorry about that RollingStone! Thanks for trying to help.

Try downloading on Rapidshare and see do you get 375 Kb/s in Firefox !
