Derek and the Dominos
Derek and the Dominos
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
This is one of my all time favorites. Clapton had been touring with Delany and Bonnie and had decided to record with Bobby Whitlock, Jim Gordon and Carl Radle. Duane Allman jumped in after the first song to add a very mean slide guitar tracks.
Clapton had just come of a relationship with Patti Boyd. The rest of the band just had come together at the right time and place to do this recording.
The vocal interaction between Whitlock and Clapton on some of those songs is flat out incredible. Bobby's moanful wail coupled with Claptons hard edged voice just makes this album.
I brought this up because there is a thread on the Hoffman forums about this album. The thread starter is Coco Carmel. She posted a lot of info on that album. She's the wife/girlfriend of Bobby Whitlock.
The question was...who was the girl in the liner notes in the picture montage.
The answer is as sad as some of the songs.
FYI ..the girl on the Layla album is Kay Poorboy . She was in love with Carl and when he died she couldn't take living without him and shot herself in the head with a pistol on Christmas Eve or day , they buried her next to Carl .
"Tell the Truth" was originally going to be the single , however it was pulled because Eric and Bobby did not like the Phil Spector production and did not like that they didn't sound like The Dominos , "Roll it Over" came out as the single . Nothing was happening for the band so nothing was going on with record . A year and a half later , Ron Houseman started to play the long version of Layla non-stop onair , and it finally caught on . Unfortunatly the band had been broken up ...Duane had died , and Eric was in seclusion . CC
Anyway.....are you a fan?

Bell Bottom Blues has always been one of my favorites from Clapton. My wife and I went to see Clapton about 5 or 6 years ago in concert, amazing to see live

The unplugged version of Layla's pretty easy on the ears as well

Interesting part about that piano piece. It was written by Rita Coolidge. Jim Gordon who was going with her at the time, tried with Bobby to get something going with it. He finally talked Clapton to adding it at the end of Layla. Coolidge never got writing credit for it.
Bell Bottom Blues is a killer song, Indy.

Hey DH, have you listened to the 'Me and Mr. Johnson' album?

I thought it was a good album...introduced me to a number of old school blues songs I had never heard before, and to have Clapton doing them just set it off for me.

Steve Winwood brings tears to ones eyes singing "Can't find my way home". I read somewhere he wrote that song when he was 12 or 14.

Yes...Claptop is my second highest album collection...first place was always the Stones...had up to 33 of their albums at one point (yes..vinyl for those who are counting the years) For a while the Grateful Dead took second place..but later in college I got more into Clapton, cds starting becoming the popular medium, and his album collection took over 2nd place.downhill wrote:

Fave song on that album...and boy is it fun to crank up and jam this song..."Why does love got to be so bad".
Another album I love, 461 Ocean Boulevard. Motherless Children, Let it Grow, and Mainline Florida are fun songs there.
I also like going back to some of his lesser known mid 70's albums, some great songs that hardly anyone knows. I recommend you search and give an ear...
(no reason to cry)
*Carnival
*Hello Old Friend
*Hungry
Backless
*Walk out in the rain
*Tell me that you love me <==great great great song, one of the first Claptop leads I learned to play...simple liquidy blues sound
*Promises <==a delightful duet with Marcy Levy

Money and Cigarettes
*The Shape You're In <==great driving guitar throughout
And another absolutely fan-tas-tic duet song with Marcy
*The Core. <===Vocals sung with drive and passion, and meaty crunchy loose guitar in the background. Also one of the rare songs Clapton had horns in, had Mel Collins (often played horns for the Stones) toot some sax.
Saw him in concert back in college....I couldn't talk for several days, no voice...from all the screaming and woohoos.

Classic album although I was never much of a Clapton fan. Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad was my favorite. That song was jammin'! Duane Allman FTW!
I also liked Thorn Tree In The Garden, and Bell Bottom Blues. For me, although I liked the song, Layla was a bit played. Brings back memories.

Great album. There's a cool documentary that plays now and again, it's about Thomas Dowd, the guy who engineered the album. He plays some tracks fro the studio sessions and tells the story about how Clapton met Duane. Here it is:

Anyway, I have some of those studio recordings and they're incredible. Most don't have Duane on them yet. Duane actually MAKES that album the great album it is. He plays all the slide on the album. At that time, Claptons skill with the slide was kindergarten, which he all but admits in that documentary.

My god the thread on the Hoffman forums, just keeps getting better and better. If you're a fan of this album or of Clapton/Whitlock, you really should read it.
It's like having a causual conversation with Whitlock in his living room. Amazing!
