How about some more info. Had the computer been booted up before? I take it that you bought it as an open box and when you tried to boot, it wouldn't, correct?

Have you tried to boot into safe mode?

Give as many details as possible, please...

yea, return it and get a different one. my experience is that if an electronic device has a prob within the no questions asked return time, (30 days or so) then you had better return it because it wil have further probs.

Got A Deal On This Comp

Post by flyfisher »

Hope it will work, no it won't start in safe mode either pretty much same error message. , I believe it was a display model, I know SAMS will take it back but I would love to get it to boot. It is an 8000 model GN554AA#ABA Media center comp. I have a set of recovery disks for my HP 7457C Media center comp, would they help? The recovery disks are for Win XP though??

I'd take it back. It should work out of the box....something like that..possibly corrupted...or faulty parts (bad RAM, failing hard drive). Even if you spent your time trying to fix it....the chance that something is still corrupted..or faulty parts that may fail again (such as past their warranty)...I'd not chance it.

Recovery disks are often model specific...so using recovery disks for another model computer.... :nope:

Well, if you don't want to return it, you can try reformatting it... Since it won't boot anyway, I guess no harm in trying. Just don't wait too long and let your 30 day (or whatever yours is) warranty expire...

Sometimes proprietary computers are a pain to install drivers for. I would not advise using a recovery disk from a different computer though. :nope:

If you have an OEM or retail disk of 2000, you can surely try. I have done that for friends on a few occasions, and as I said, sometimes locating drivers can be a bit time consuming...

That does appear to be a media center computer, were you going to use it as such, or just got a deal and plan to use it as a typical computer for websurfing, word processing, email, etc.?

You might get Win2K to work OK....depending on if there are drivers for all of this newer hardware that support 2K.

I Tried Sometning

Post by flyfisher »

I think I hit escape and it asked for Main Drive then two sub folders, I chose the second one down, now the comp is flashing a drive light (sort of like when you are copying a file)?? been doing that for an hour, what is going on with that? Do appreciate the input, heck the DVD writer and the moniter are worth at least 300??

Sometimes that error is caused by loose conections on the inside that need to be reseated.

If you are still in the warranty period and can exchange it, don’t even waste you time reformatting and such.

More then likely, if you do decide to return after the format, they won’t do it since you put an unauthorized OS on it.

Also since its XP Media Center, it’ll be damn near impossible to find all the correct drivers for it to operate properly with Win2k. As an example go here and look at drivers for ATI’s video cards. They offer drivers for XP media center, but only one set for Win2K.

If you are willing to lose a lot of options that the PC was originally set up for, use Win2k. If you want full use of the PC as a media center, get the correct restore disc.

If it were me, I exchange the PC before I got too far into it.
