I've always been of the opinion that someone who deploys OS's and PC's doesn't necesarrily have an understading of how they work. They just know what they're supposed to do. Take a line out of the instruction sheet and

Just sayin'

IMHO, if anything, Windows 7 is going to use MORE RAM than Vista does. Why? Because it's cheaply available, easy to upgrade, and easy to scale with. They could easily implement a system (and have, called Super Fetch) that uses your available memory, however much or little it may be, to increase overall system speed and responsiveness. Why they change a good thing makes no sense to me so to expect otherwise is not very smart.

PS: OS X does it the same way, and AFAIK (before customizations) so does Linux. It was always a beef of mine, the way XP handled memory (or rather, didn't handle memory).

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box ;).

Actually, it's quite easy to see Vista's real memory usage. When I boot up, the performance monitor shows that it's using 43% of my 2 gigs. However, when I open up memory hungry apps (such as 2 WoW clients at the same time) and close them, memory usage has dropped to 23%. So it's actually using less than 512 mb of ram. In these days, with two gigs of decent ram available for around €30, I don't think that should be much of an issue, really.

In any case, I think it's worth it. There are so many details where you feel like "whoa, they actually thought something through!" when you discover them. For example, the system automatically defrags when you're not using your computer. And it even doesn't if its running on a laptop battery. Also, I love the way that Vista links everything. If something doesn't work due to a certain setting, you'll get a notification with a link that opens up the appropriate screen of the control panel to change it. To search for something on the PC, just hit the windows button and start typing - and it's lightning fast as well (you may want to set the indexing paths first for it to work properly).
