infected file and need help

i have windows xp system. i have run avg, adaware,spybtsearch and destroy and all freeze when they get to the infected file. i also have run chkdsk and it freezes at 72%. I narrowed it down to a picture file but i cant delet, open, or move it. this is my first time running hijack this and these are the resalts. thank you in advance.

Install that, it will let you delete the file you're stuggling to delete.

YARDofSTUFF, thanks for the reply. i tried the program you suggested and it allowed my to move the file to to be deleted at next boot. i then tried to restart and it froze again on restart. i tried safe mode and it froze booting up safe mode. i had to reboot to a previous working configuration and i finally got a restart but file is still there and bad.

i also tried a restore to a previous date and it goes through the motions but after restart it says no changes have been made. i tried several dates.

any other suggestions?

Have you tried turning off your system restore if possible. This will delete all restore points that maybe infected with this file. Then use the program YardsOf Stuff Posted. This may help. If it dose. Then run all your spyware programs and antivirus program. GoodLuck.

i gave that a try today. disabled restore and used moveonboot. same thing, freeze on start up. i had to start from working configuration. any other suggestions?

You have a tuffy there. Have you tried to rename the file and delete it? Sometimes that works. Sounds Like you have a bad virus. If it were me. I would try to save what I can to cd. If possible. Then do a format and reinstall windows. Hopefully someone here may know another way.

Remove your hard drive and install it in a clean pc as a slave drive or in an external USB enclosure and delete the suspect file.

A lot of times the system wont let you deleat a video or picture, thats in a file if its also in the library or a now playing list memory of a player, windows, real ,quicktime ..ect.
so check that first to see if its the problem. could use ccleaner to dump the cache and history of all players to be sure.
If that doesnt work disable system restore reboot to save mode and remove it from there. But if your just trying to manualy remove it, if you dont also remove its reg. entries at the same time. will most likely be back after your on line awhile and it gets a trigger command.

it is simply a picture file from 2005 of my kids.

as far as removing the hard drive i would have to find someone to help me with that. it is a gateway laptop and i have never taken one apart and know little about how to do it.

i did run avast on all other files but that one and it came up with nothing. so i enable hidden files and opened file in explore and all it showed other than the picture files is "zbthumnail" i do have canons zoom browser and i assume zbthumbnail is related to that.

i backed up all of the file i could think of. and did a driver ISO. back up from start,programs,system recovery. is there anything eles i should do befor i wipe the hard drive and start fresh.

i would still rather try to figure this out without a wipe of the system if anyone has any thing else for me to try.

Try uninstalling the Cannon Zoom Browser. This might let you delete this file. If so reinstall the software after.If you still plan on useing it. I ran across this a couple years back with HP photo software. Hope this helps

i tried uninsalling zoombrowser and still lock-up. i also tried recovery options and did the full factory restore and it froze on reformatting hard drive for 30min.. lucky for me i powered down and it did restart with no problems. so im starting to think it is a bad spot on my hard drive or corrupt file. i also did defraggler and it freezes on that file. what can be done for that? should i move this to a different forum? thanks

Thr only reason certain files cannot be deleted when in Windows is that the file is "in use" by another program or process. In use = some running process has indexed the file or is "hooked" to it via search database or some other tie to the particular file. To delete the file when it's "in use" you have to kill the process that is "using" it. Oft times the process is also a service.

There's a great utility (Unlocker) that can kill the process that uses the undeletable file. Get it here:

Realize that images infected w/ a virus are extremely rare, and most often such infected images also depend upon an additional executable program that extracts the viral code from the image in order to replicate itself or cause damage.

Beings it froze during the formatting of the hard drive. It may well be the harddrive has a bad sector in it .Or the harddrive just getting ready to go. You would be best to move this to the hardware forum.
