half a wireless network !!!!!

Post by swm2 »

Can anyone help me, I have been trying to set up a wireless network to connect my desktop, laptop and Modem/router.

I have a belkin wireless g+ mimo usb adapter in connected to the desktop. A rt73 usb wireless lan card this was in the laptop when I bought it. Finally a thompson speedtouch router/modem. The Cyprus telephone company say they do not support wireless so they told me I am on my own.

Everything appeared to go fine both the desk top and laptop log in automatically to the wireless connection. From the desk top I can access the net through the speedtouch, but can not access the laptop.

The laptop indicates it has a good signal strength, appears to access the desktop, although the files it shows are not accurate and may belong to the old ethernet network. It can not access the internet, firefox states the web site can not be reached.

I have tried everything, and it's important as the wife complains of being an internet widow.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Start with the basics...log into the Speedtouch...setup the wireless SSID to be a unique name that you recognize...such as SWM2s. Start with no security...open...can the laptop see it and connect? If so...now turn your security up to WPA or WPA2..and reconfigure all PCs for that.

TCP/IP for the laptops wireless set to obtain auto?

Wow thanks stonecat, didn't expect a reply so soon. First stupid question, how do I log into the speedtouch, bearing in mind that CYTANET have said they will not help me. I presume auto TCP/IP means obtain through DHCP, I know it is cos it takes ages searching for an address.

Thanks

Sounds like your laptop is having no problem associating with the router but you are not obtaining IP information. I'd start there.

Along with Checking your IP configuration, I would also check any wireless Routers around you and make sure your on a seperate channel then your neighbors as channel intererence can create issues like your experiencing.

I agree, start really basic and work upwards.

When connected to it...your computer will obtain a private IP address in the same range as the appliance. Run an IPCONFIG /ALL...in the resulting information..you'll see the IP address of the Gateway and DHCP server...usually the same when dealing with gateway appliances. Probably 192.168.1.254.

That's the LAN IP address of it...point your browser that way.

Now..username and password...most of the DSL ISPs around where I work put them on a yellow sticker on the bottom of the units.

Their telephone support should at least walk you through logging onto the web admin...I realize they don't want to support wireless..so don't ask them how to configure your wireless..just say "I need help logging onto the web admin of the router so I can configure my wireless..I realize I'm responsible for my wireless..I don't need help with that..just the user/pass and IP for the Speedtouch."

Here is the result of the IP config command

Primary DNS Suffix....................................blank

Wins proxy enabled....................................no

Ehernet adapter local area connection

Media State...........................................disconnected
Description...........................................via rhine II fast ethernet adapter
