What speed did you pay your ISP to give you?

I just upgraded from 768down/256up to 1.5down/512up. When I did my speed test, I only got 992 or so down and very disappointed. That's when I decided to try the Optimizer again. I tried it years ago and was quite disappointed, but this is a different computer, so I figured, what the hey? Anyway I applied the optimal settings, rebooted, tested and got a whopping 260-something down. I was freaking! That's when I posted on the TCP/IP Optimizer WOW thread and Philip responded, asking for my Analyzer results. That's pretty much it. Oh, BTW, my latest speed test is at 1286down/486up. I'm reasonably satisfied with that, considering what I ordered, but if I can squeek out a couple more kibbles n' bits, I'm ready to try. Thanks for your interest...

Thanks T, I'll try once more. At least if it kills the speed, I can go back to Windows Defaults. I'll check this out tomorrow during my day off and post the results. Thanks again for your time...

If you encounter any problem, you can use WinSockFix to revert to XP default settings.

OK T, here's the deal. I ran a test at SpeedTest.net before using the Optimizer. I got 1048down. Then I opened Optimizer and plugged in your suggested settings. I rebooted and hit SpeedTest.net again. This time I got 1201down. I know the test results vary a little from run to run, but it was an improvement, even though not as high as the 1248 I got from Speakeasy. I used the Atlanta server for both tests. Thanks for your assistance.

Let's do a check on signal quality.

Do a tracert to http://www.yahoo.com and post.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Hey T, yeah I'm familiar with tracert. I've used it many times to pin a high speed data trouble on another carrier (grin). Anyway, here's the info you asked for:

There is a spike in ping times at hop 5 going above 200ms.

I do not know if it is network problem or if it is caused by a malware in your comp as ping times at your modem in hop 2 are a tad higher then those in hop 3.

I would scan the comp for possible malware to rule this out as the cause and then recheck ping times at hop 5.

10-4 there, big dog. I would have never known to look that closely at the old pinger. I've mostly used tracert just to see where the net was open. That's great info. Although I doubt if it's malware, since I keep the computer squeaky clean and run realtime scans continuously. I'll still update all my definitions and rescan, then run the tracert again. If it shows up in the same place, I'll paste it to an e-mail to my network support and hope they'll address it. Thanks for your time...

OK, T, I just ran a quick tracert before doing all the other stuff, and the spike is gone. For some reason, the copy/paste isn't working, but what used to be a jump from 17ms to 211ms is now 21ms to 23ms. Later...
