Blue screen of death

Post by Suzie »

A friend of mines, son's laptop has the blue screen of death.
"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"
TECH INFO
*** STOP: 0X000000ED (0X81987e30,0XC000009C, 0X00000000. 0X00000000)

Dell inspiron 1200
Cleron M
Processor ID 06D8
Intel 915GM/910GML graphics

Can he still get it to boot from XP disc on start up to recover?

He's not able to access restore or anything. Not sure what this error is.

Thanks for all help :)

thats usually from a drive going bad... but if the boot files are corrupted you could throw in the windows disk and do a "R" for Repair..once in the dos prompt type chkdsk /p to check the disk for errors then type fixboot to repair the boot files.. type exit to get out of it and reboot.

chkdsk /r is desired.

chkdsk /p "Performs an exhaustive check even if the drive is not marked for chkdsk to run. This parameter does not make any changes to the drive."

chkdsk /r "Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. Implies /p."

Also chkdsk /f is a quickie.
You may want to attempt "fixboot"

STOP: 0X000000ED is an ugly error...can have lots of causes....bad hard drive cable, failing hard drive itself, corrupt hard drive (doesn't necessarily mean failing drive)

1st repair, repaired somethings but we are attempting to repair again. Some things couldn't be repaired the 1st time. Thanks for all the replies. We'll see how he makes out.

Soon as PC is running at normal desktop...I encourage the user to backup impotant data before performing more hard drive tasks. She may be up and running now..but often..if a drive is on the edge of a cliff as far as failing...intensive tasks such as repairs can push them over the edge.

Nothing wrong with doing a few chkdsks...once up to desktop...I'd go to My Computer, right click the drive, properties, tools, error checking..fill in both checkboxes...and restart the computer (You'll get a message about not having exlusive rights..and do you wish to run on the next restart==>yes).

After that completes...restart the PC again..and go into safe mode (F-8 during the reboot process..right before the windows logo screen loads)...when in safe mode....kick off a disk defrag.

It'll work the drive hard...and if the drive may fail...well, it was bound to sooner than later..it's just these intensive tasks may bring it a few days early. Tis why I mentioned to backup important data earlier.

Thanks I let him know. He's very happy, his son had this laptop in Kuwait and there was a lot of info he wanted off the computer. He's happy to be able to save the info. Thanks again.
