Question about running a DNS server at home.

I had someone arguing with me if this could be done or not..
now I'm questioning myself about the following.

If I own a domain name, for a web site, can I run a DNS server for it,
on my LAN at home?

Can it be done? of course.
Should it be done? up for debate.

I agree, running any server is cause for security concerns..
