Cannot establish broadband IP connection on initial startup sometimes...

Post by MadMax350 »

Computer in my sig. Here's the situation.

I have Verizon FiOS broadband ISP hooked to 1 wireless router (main), and a second uplinked wired router (secondary) next to my home PC. I have the second router installed because I have multiple PC's in the same room and the wireless router is located centrally in the house for the best transmit location for a wireless laptop (and I didn't feel like running a bunch of wires thru the attic).

Normally everything works fine. Never really have any trouble connecting to the internet via wireless laptop running VISTA; except for the usual long amount of time it takes VISTA to establish a wireless connection after booting up. Sometimes when I turn on my desktop PC, I cannot connect to the internet. Most of the time it does this I can still access the main router via typing 192.168.0.1. Just cannot get on the net. However I have verified I am still connected to the ISP because I can get on the net at the same time using the laptop and another PC I have connected to the secondary router. In order to get my desktop connected, I have to "DISABLE" the local area connection, wait about 10 sec, then "ENABLE" the local area connection (thru WinXP). Then most of the time that fixes it. Rarely, I will have to unplug the second router for a couple of seconds in order to establish a connection to my ISP.

Could this issue be related to this MS KB article?: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913522/en-us

If not, anyone else had this problem and has a solution?

additional info:

-Main router is a D-Link DI-624S firmware 1.00
-Secondary router is a Linksys BEFSR41
-Other PC attached (via wired connection) to the secondary router is running Win2000 SP4

Well I installed the hotfix for this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913522/en-us

and...it did NOT fix the issue. And to make matters worse, now it seems like every time I boot my PC up I have this issue (was starting to do this before I installed the hotfix).

I have been reading about a lot of people having issues with the D-Link wireless routers. This DI-624S isn't that new so I was wondering if that could possibly be the problem?

Any ideas?

ISSUE RESOLVED -- Well sort of...

Post by MadMax350 »

Well I finally got fed up and disconnected the second router from the system completely -- and problem is gone. I put a wireless card in the other PC I had in my office so I could still get on the net with that one.

I would still like to get this working tho. Seems to me that there might be an issue between the two routers working together in an uplinked configuration. Anyone else ever run into this?

I never double NAT networks. If you have a primary router, and you want to add a wireless router to it..flip that second wireless router to run as an access point only, don't use it as a router.
