Weird cd problem?

Post by weedancer »

Ok so Ive noticed on a couple of cd's ive put into my computer to import them. My computer will literally lock up. Even if i restart it will just get to a black screen with a text thing in the corner.

But when i take out the cd everything is back to normal? Anyone know what this is caused by?

I don't know what causes it but I have had a similar experience. I have one cd-rw disk that locks up XP if I put it in any of my optical drives. I can't erase it because it locks up the PC as soon as I insert it. I just chucked it into the circular bin.

sounds like the drive is failing or the software in which is default to play it is corrupted or conflicting with similar software.

Seen this with alot of the Dell D800, D810's here lately along with a few Tosihiba's

Example of a CD that does work (details) and a CD that does NOT work (details about the CD (title)). How old is the CD drive?

Do you have one CD drive or two (I have two). If you do... is one "jumped" to be a slave and the other the master? Not both master or both slave? Is the second drive empty when the CD locks up?

Thanks. That helps. One or two drives?

*edit*

What program are you using to play the CD? If you are using Microsoft Media player, try another player (we can suggest some free alternatives).

By process of elimination, we might get this figured out. (not me... the smart guys already in this thread).

Can you try that CD on another computer in the house to see if the same thing happens on that computer?

Also try this:

1. Go to My Comp.
2. rt click the cd drive icon > select Properties (w/ no cd in drive).
3. Autoplay Tab.
4. Select Music CD in dropdown menu.
5. select Take no action.

If joy and no lockup, open your music player and play the cd.

Do the same for Mixed content as well because THAT CD may also have other content on it such as pictures or promotional stuff.

I also think it's something with the autoplay function.
Also have a few cd's/dvd's wich give me some trouble , especially when rebooting computer ,it just hangs when these cd's are in the drive.
I just have autoplay disabled ,and no problems afterwards. :nope:

B.t.w. i also have a Dell comp 9100 dimension.

The IDE cable connected to the drice, replace it.

If that doesnt work and you have another CD ROM, then put that one in your system and see if that works.
