Oh no she didn't....
We had a potluck lunch at work today and one of the ladies in the office made something called "Monkey Bread". I had never heard of it. As I was getting a slice, I overheard one of the clerks say to someone in line, "We never call it monkey bread, we've always called it ****** bread".
My jaw dropped and I quickly got my plate and left. I couldn't believe it! I know I wasn't the only one that heard it; several people gasped but NO ONE SAID ANYTHING! I think people were in shock. I felt awful for not confronting her. I should have said something.

oh man, that brought back a memory! my great grandmother always called em by what you're referring to. This was into the mid 1990's she was still calling them that. She'd say it and we'd all just kinda look around for a hole to hide in. a couple of my older relatives would tell her it's not right to call them that and she'd respond "that's what we've always called 'em and I always will"david wrote:I am left to wonder what she would call Brazil nuts.
seems funny from a barely 4 1/2 foot 90 some odd year old little french canadian women eh?

Offensive
Isn't Monkey bread kinda racist too knowing what it is derived from?
I've heard monkey used as a racial term towards black people as well.

Google "Brazil nuts" with the n-word. While you are at it, see if there is a candy called n- babies. Writhe in your chair if you like, but you might still hear a few old-timers reflexively use the phrases.Izzo wrote:guess i'm just not down with my racial slurs...![]()
There are plenty of these terms which have been made anachronisms, courtesy of modern decorum(PC)
A visit to a toy museum in Philadelphia had me rather uncomfortable seeing the overtly racist playthings of the past.
Please come make it for me. Everything I try, whether recipe or not, turns into crap when I try to make it.Mrs.RoundEye wrote:Monkey Bread

I would have at least pointed out to her (in private)that it was inappropriate of her to say....considering that the lady (who just happens to be black) who made it was standing within ear shot. This lady wouldn't have said anything to her. She's really meek and doesn't confront anyone. I would have confronted her for her sake at least.brembo wrote:What would have said? It's such a charged word and the most likely outcome of a confrontation is someone uttering "racist" at some point.

I was thinking the same thing but I don't think it's referring to "race" or as a racial slur.Bouncer wrote:I was thinking the same thing. One's not much better than the other given the real meaning behind either term in context.

I think it's called monkey bread because you pull it apart with your hands and some people even add bananas to the recipe at times.
