power outage - now stuck in loop

Post by maroon »

on an XP Home installation. Gets to Windows loading screen then reboots. I've tried last known good configuration and safe mode, but it still reboots.

Don't know much about troubleshooting and need some help! :(

Chkdsk came back with volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked. So I did chkdsk /p and it's hanging at 11%.

Is my HD toast now?

And thanks for your help!

/r ...if it hangs..or appears to slow down...it can be working on something. On a hard drive that had a decent crash..if files are corrupted..it can take while to work through them. I've seen it run overnight...and had success the next morning.

Ok, i'm letting it sit on chkdsk /r (still sitting at 11% tho).

Here is what I think the problem is though. I have two HDs in my system. One for OS and programs and the other for storage. Unfortunately, my pagefile is on the storage HD which evidently has gone down the crapper. What can I do to recreate a pagefile on the main OS drive? Can I do an OS reinstall without losing anything?

you could try booting from your XP CD and doing a repair. You won't have to reinstall your programs but you will have to go to windows update and redo ant Sp's and updates.
