Consumer advice on a pc

Post by j0ey »

I'm looking to buy a pc for my buisness i'd say in the $1,300 range. I need something thats good for downloading and transfering music at high speeds. I'm afraid of going to "BestBuy" and getting the run around. Do you guys have any Preferences on certain brand names?

I build custom pcs so I don't have a "brand" name. I would suggest trying a local computer store in your area, you might be surprised at how good the prices will be. If I had to choose an OEM pc I would most likely choose Dell.

For business....HP Business Desktop 7000 series or Dell Optiplex or IBM IntelliStation.

You won't find business grade PCs at your local generic chain outlets. There is a huge difference in "home grade" PCs versus "business grade" PCs.

For what kind of business is a requirement "downloading and transfering music at high speeds"?

I was wondering if there was a grade difference from home/business computers. What are the ideal specifications for this type of computer? Uploading music, editing, transferring big files without a lot of down time? Speed & storage is a big need for me.

Dell will be the ideal desktop for you. Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2gb preferred for all modern computing needs and to get the optimum experience on windows vista.

What is it you're uploading too?

Speed...almost any brand PC can compete equally in this area...but for your editing software...I'd perhaps look at what it prefers for (in its documentation) soundcard, inputs, etc.

my main concern for him is a warranty that'll help him keep his business going if the pc dies, not whether or not it's faster than the run of the mill desktop

Anything that will allow me to distribute samples of music. Putting music on CD’s, Blogs, ipods, etc. I’ll be distributing in large quantities and am worried of downtime.

I'm probably burning you guys out with all. Last question. With some exceptions for the most part laptops are generally inferior to desk tops right? As far as quickness & data transfer speeds.

On the average..yes...most laptops will have slower hard drives (the super cheap ones have painfully slow 4200rpm drives, midrange ones have somewhat sluggish 5400rpm hard drives). The better models...7200rpm drives..so you don't notice the diff that much.
