Networking & Router Problem

Post by fothsn »

Hey speedguide members :) Hopefully you can solve my problem.

After researching into using two routers together I decided to give it a go, basically I wanted a better wireless signal to my 2 laptops as my main router is downstairs (BeBox Speedtoutch 780) I had a Belkin F5D7633uk laying around, which supports 125Mbps as do the wireless cards in the laptop.

My setup is like this just to give you some sort of an Idea

Main Router ------- (Wireless) X2 Laptops.
| |
| |___ Downstairs Computer
|
|
|_______ My Computer Upstairs ***Belkin Router***

Now here is my problem I reset the default settings in the Belkin router plugged the Ethernet cable coming upstairs into the back then ran another Ethernet cable to my pc, It seemed everything was spot on I had internet access on my PC basically it was all set up and working fine. Now when I try to access the Belkins interface via 192.168.2.1 nothing shows up, I can connect to the Speedtoutch router fine and access the config page etc but I need access to the Belkins settings as the wireless on the router is open and everybody near me can connect to it and use my 15Meg unlimited download speed

I’ve tried to plug the belkin into the pc only but I still can’t connect to 192.168.2.1 somewhere it’s got totally messed up

Sorry if this sounds like gibberish I can’t explain it any better :D

Once you've reset your Belkin, you should telnet to 192.168.1.1, as opposed to 192.168.2.1; provided that your computer is also part of that same 192.168.1.0/24 network. ;)

Hope this helps!

I'd keep things simple....flip the Belkin into AP mode.....assign its LAN IP in the same range as your primary router...but outside the DHCP pool. Meaning..if your main router is something like 192.168.1.1...give the Belkin a LAN IP of 192.168.1.245 or something up higher like that. (.245 is a standard AP address) Flipping the Belkin to AP mode (which it natively supports in the web admin) will disable DHCP..because you usually don't want 2x DHCP services on the same network.

Now uplink your Belkin to your primary router..using a LAN port of each..you will not use the WAN port of the Belkin. You're now using it somewhat as an access point instead of another router.
