New Cable Modem installation
New Cable Modem installation
Well it worked, the cable was disconnected at our old house yesterday, and we got a new installation done here at the new house today.
I use to have a Motorola CyberSurfr Wave modem and propriatary service no DOCSIS etc..
Now they game me a brand new RCA DCM225 Modem which is DOCSIS 1.1 that's reall cool. BUT I still have the stupid 128kbps upload cap! ARGH!!!!! I've been getting 3Mbps down, but i still got much more testing/tweaking to do. They also gave me a new NIC which i wanna see the specs on but i can't find out much about it, it's a 3Com model: 3c905cx-txnm
if anyone has this model or knows all it's interesting details let me know...
Well i still got much more testing to do but so far it's neat, my pings are AWESOME, less then 10ms to the gateway, I ping www.speedguide.net at 50ms! it's pretty sweet stuff now! Just that stupid 128kbps upload cap! errrr
oh well, more info will follow as i collect it....
oh BTW this house is only 2 miles away from the other house, my what a difference 2 miles can make! see it's all location, location, location

Brent,
The location didnt matter, its just that DOCSIS is a better standard. I didnt move, but Wee96 for me a new RCA DCM225 like yours (I had same modem you had, the moto) and pings to gateway are always sub-8. All pings to sites are down too.
The info page on the RCA isnt very helpful, but a way to find it out:
Tracert to a website, and the first hop should be like 10.114.14.1
Thats the gateway of your modem. My modems ip is 10.114.14.3, so replace the .1 with any number till it works. Try .3, etc. And when ya find it, it restarts your modem

The 192.168.100.1 address was correct, but you need to add it to Exceptions list to bypass the proxy.
There are 2 pages of info. Not much on the first that you can't see from the LEDs. Try http://192.168.100.1/moreInfo.html Pay attention to caps.
The LEDs give a good indication of startup status. They are discussed in the manual.

The exact setup I have Brent. Same modem, NIC, and same caps. Very stable and has been for two months running.

The biggest reason your speeds are different is not because you live in a different area. The Motorola is proprietary modem which tied to a Motorola CR (Cable Router). You are now tied to a CISCO or 3 COM router which means the equipment going to the RDC is entirely different. More capacity, speed, etc...
I don't know the details of the 3COM 905, but it comes highly recommended.
I hope I'm not telling you old information.
http://192.168.100.1/moreInfo.html is definitely the URL for the modems diagnostic page.

sweet, thanks for the info there...
one thing i also noticed is the ethernet port on this thing is 10/100 and it's negotiating 100Mbps right now, that's pretty cool, accept it really has no benefits cause the max downstream on cable is only 10Mbps, i wonder though if the ethernet port is at full or half duplex though....
i'm really liking this DOCSIS stuff, my pings are awesome and so stable now, it's so much more snappy on the web now...
Oh and what i meant by location is when you get cable at one location vs. another location that location could have DOCSIS or Not, or even if with DOCSIS things might be different per area, for example my friend also on DOCSIS with an RCA modem 5 miles away can upload at 768kbps while i'm capped at 128kbps on my node...
Also another example, John (the mod) also has DOCSIS @Home where he lives, and guess what, he can upload at 170KB/sec yes killo-bytes per second, andn gets awesome downloads too, so while we both have docsis obviously location (and the network setup) is much different still....
that's what i'm getting at...
see people really need to realize this, cause a lot of people getting cable or dsl expect it to be the same for them as their friends, but if your location is different, it may not be the same, you can't expect it to be the same from location to location...

And about location, the caps they issue arent with relativitiy of location. WHen comcast started issueing new docsis modems on truck rolls, they replaced the old modems with new ones because of the conversion. Well this was before they setup the "cap on provision". Couple of my friends got new ones and never got capped because they got on before that. I unfortunatly did, but I ended up getting uncapped anyway.

Brent your upload will stay the same , and download might improve a little. When they installed are DOCSIS modems where I live in canton . Iam on rr my upload stay the same about 389. My download is what improved along with my pings. They don't change your upload is what I was told. Just gives you a little more download and lower pings. I have the toshiba PCX1100 and it works great. At least this si what my provider explain to me. You could check with yours and see. GoodLuck!

the 192.168.100.1 diagnostic through the http is usually for the sb3100. whether or not the web page accsess works id determined by the firm ware. dont ask wich firm wre model you need i dont know. If getting to the diag does not work that way reset your ip to static, 192.168.100.1 sub 255.255.255.0 reboot the open your browser and go to http://192.168.100.1/mainhelp.html
