downloads stall once in a while

Post by undersc0re »

I downloaded and installed the TCPOptimizer did all the tweaks, it is twice as fast now, but one problem now my downloads will stall once in a while, doesn't matter if I use IE6 or mozilla, the stalls get worse when I have multiple d/l going. It was fine forever until I did this. I have the cable modem and WinXP. Was there something I should not increase for cable modem if this happens? I searched for answers, but this seems to be more of a problem in the ppoe dsl. Thx

It will almost always happen as follows, I have a download or 2 or 3 going, and I open a new page on the browser, or go back or something like that, and the downloads or download will just stall out. I can't seem to find anything out there to fix my problem.

Sounds very odd. Have you run any adware scanners like adaware and spybot?

Also what did you set the Optimizer to, adn what is ur connection?

Yes I ran the housecall scan, adware, symantec, windows defender, also my cable is so slow its like 50 kb/s most of the time. I will post what I got from the analyzer. The twice as fast speeds were there when I first tweaked it but they dimished when I played with the settings putting it back to the way it was. My connection is regular highspeed cable from SHAW in Canada, I run the regular pci ethernet card with a cat5 from the modem about 4 feet. I run WinXP with all the updates done. Everything is up to date, and it is a built in ethernet connection on the motherboard which is an ASUS K8NE4 Deluxe.

OK I noticed I had maybe 10 ports open when I start mozilla and maybe 4 open when I start IE, But when I start Live Messenger I get like 40 that open in netstat, maybe more. Is this normal, it almost seems like Micr0s0ft put spyware in my computer with this program. I would attach a prntscr shot of it but I do not know how. Any help would be appreciated, my speed issue was resolved as my provider was having a problem with they're router or something in the area I was in for the last week. I am just concerned with all of these ports that open with Live Messenger....thx.

Well I dont think it'll help with your current problem, but change your RWIN to 64240.

I'm not familiar with how live messenger works. With it on do the SG Security Scanner test in the broadband/broadband tools menu.

I'm curious if its opening the ports or if its just using them.

Do you have a router or firewall?

sounds like you have something fighting with the browsers... got drivers installed if your running a dual core setup? All other drivers installed? Updated all your microsoft updates/windows updates?

Ok my connection has speeded up. I phoned and complained, it seemed to get faster, they advertise a 5 mbit d/l and 1 mbit upload, so I did a speed test for them and got 2 mbit, which is the fastest I can get lately (last week) and they said thats fast enough. I told them its half of what I used to get but he said he can't explain why it was so fast before and that the 5 mbit claim is for excellent conditions only. SO I dunno, I did the spysweeper housecall and symantec virus scan and all those to clean up the computer, but it did nothing, is there a ping utility or something to trace where the packets are slowing down or something of the sort? I just want to know where the bottleneck is, I will post my analysis below again and maybe it can shed a bit of light. The scan I did on this site just showed a bunch of green filtered? udp ports nothing crazy. I am also adding a ping analyze copy and paste under it.
