What do you think of Road Runner Service?

Post by Ragnarok »

Road Runner is gay. Damn people can't help us with this problem. We pay so much for slow cable modem speeds and problems. What do you think about Road Runner?

Well, speed patches don't work. I tried, I get no difference.

Roadrunner is sort of ok, but I wish the cable companies would bump up the download/upload speeds. Optimum Online users are getting 3-6 Mbps/1-2 Mbps, while we're stuck with whatever the cable companies give us.

My service is capped at 3000/768, and I used to get 4000-5000/620-700, now I'm getting turtle speeds. It's because of the neighbors. When school is out, that's when I get turtle speeds. At peak time, I get more slower. The speeds won't go back to fast until 11pm.

What I'm paying for, dialup? I have tweaked, too, and it still doesn't do any good. Look like I'm going have to reinstall Windows 98 SE, and try the tweaking again.

Well, I know Road Runner is OK, if you live in Hawaii, its the only best internet connection available in the State. DSL is something that not much people look at. I say Road Runner should improve be increasing our bandwidth and getting more speeds. More Uploads and Downloads speed so that we can be more satisfied.
My Road Runner speeds increase only when my neighbors are asleep and or if they are away from home. Right now it is 11:37 pm and my internet is getting faster. It would be better if our neighbors didn't have to share our internet.

Well for what its worth. I've had roadrunner since its inception in my area and have been more than satisfied. LOCAL Tech support is very knowledgeable, if I did have a problem a cable tech and/or field analyst was here the next day. My roadrunner cost me no more than than my old AT&T Dial up with an extra phone line. My speeds are right in line with some of the fastest speeds I've seen posted here, well with the exception of the last one I read where the poster was getting 88 to 100 times a 56k.

Well I like RR were I am, generally because it's the fastest thing out were I live, (well sure there is 8 Mbit down/4Mbit upload SDSL, but you also pay for it) that I can afford, I having checked the speeds in a while, but it seems fast enough, anyway, with my new router, it doesn't matter when my primary computer shuts down. The really nice thing is it Never goes down, hell RR is more reliable than my last two dialup servers, that's not funny. Also a big thing about cable modems and Dsl is that matters more were you live than the Name of the company, simply in some areas they are much better than others. The only thing I don't like about RR is the crappy mail servers.

I liked 'em for 1 1/2 years then they capped
me just last night! Was 10Mb/3Mb, now 3mb/256Kb. Cox/@Home took over RR here and are taking them down with them. Cox sucks.
RR has been very reliable though.

My speeds with RR have been overall very good. I average between 4000-5000 kbps/680-790 kbps. I know as more users are added to my node it will drop, but it is nowhere near "dial-up". Cox Communications installed completely new fiber prior to offering RR service in Manhattan. Time will tell.

I have RoadRunner and get great speeds. They just updated their whole system to DOCSIS. So I can not complain.Guess it depends who provides you roadrunner for you.Sorry if you are getting slow speeds , You might try calling them and see why. GoodLuck!

Try removing the patches with the default patch. You should only need one patch to see a differance. Uselly SguideTweak for the os you are useing seem to work the best. Just remeber to back the reg up before you use the tweaks.

You people are lucky that your speeds are far greater than mines. I think my average speed is less that 1 mega bit. Or maybe higher. I just feel unsatisfied with road runner ever since they changed my ip address, and put it in a junk one. Well, I don't feel happy, Imagine if you live in Hawaii, and most of the places you go on the internet is on the mainland. And your only cable modem service is Road Runner. Everything just sucks when you live in Hawaii. Some paradise I live in. I heard that some cable modem services are planning to make some really big cable to increase our bandwidth. Any of you ever heard of this before?

This is the site that I use to test my speed.

http://msn.zdnet.com/partners/msn/bandwidth/speedtest50.htm

So far I've been getting less than 1 Mbps and a speed of a ISDN modem.

Happy with RR here. Capped at 2mb and getting on average 1900kbps. Before the cap I got 4000+kbps but sometimes during peak would drop real low. Been consistent since capped back in October. Support has been good too. Email support has answered within a few hours anytime I've asked about something.

I also use RR here in Hawaii. One thing users on the island of Oahu need to remember that this island only has 1..... I repeat 1.... internet connection off the island. That means not only RR, but all of the other ISP's and all the military bases on the island are sharing the same internet connection off island. That is one reason why RR is slower (on average) than other cable modem ISP's on the mainland. Just my 2 cents.

Well, I too, am using roadrunner. And while it's better than Dialup, it isnt anything to brag about. I have seen some of the speeds some people get here, and I hope for the day when i can even get close t that. As was mentioned above, tweaks dont seem to work on roadrunner, at least nothing that's real noticeable.

I have RR in Ann Arbor, MI. Seems RR is good for only 2 months at a time, then they run out of bandwidth due to over subscribing and over selling their service.

They had to buy additional bandwidth in Dec. '00.

So its a love/hate kinda deal.

In general, I've found that the kind of speeds you'll get with RR vary with whomever the local provider is. One thing for sure is that in my area (a subrurb outside of Charleston, SC) speeds are definately capped to the point where the different patches (and I've exahustively tried them all) do very little good. In fact, as of right now I'm running with Windows98 default settings and getting almost the same speed as with any of the patches (800k to 1Mb). Beats dial-up though.

However, as far as national or even regional service goes, RR seems to be severely lacking. When they moved into our community (not quite a year ago) the service in terms of outages and the response and troubleshooting to fix them was absolutely terrible.

The local affiliate was trying to do what it could, but the network engineers weren't local for one thing, and the service policies that were in place really hampered them in many ways as well.

I serve in our local government and spearheaded efforts to get a responsive effort launched by RR. Attempts at contact with RR at various state, regiional, and national levels largely went ignored until we began looking into our town's franchise agreement with the local affiliate. We wanted to see if they were in violation of the agreement.

All of a sudden (and very coincidentally) service suddenly began to improve. Network engineers began looking into things and problems were solved.

As of the last few months, RR service has been reliable and I am satisfied that early connection problems have been ironed out. However, we probably never will get the speeds that they initially advertised (50 times dialup..an ad they I no longer see run here).

But all of this with Road Runner may be water under the bridge anyway. Much of the financial press has mentioned that with the merger of Time Warner and AOL, it's likely that Road Runner as an ISP and as a brand will be no more. AT&T and others have relinquished (or are in the process thereof) much of the RR network to Time Warner. The orignal plan was to migrate all customers over to AOL, but at the last minute to appease the FTC, the new conglomerate promised to give the consumer a choice between at lest two other ISP's.

Even with that provision, however, I still have this sinking feeling that either through pricing our service schemes, AOL will somehow emerge as the only practical choice. I hope I'm wrong, but with as much market power that the newly merged company has...I sure wouldn't bet on it.

Hope this helps.

I guess the only bad thing about getting Road Runner Cablem Modem service is where you live.

RoadRunner here has been operated by Time Warner since they brought it here about 3 years ago....Speeds are pretty good, reliability is good, and the few times i've had to deal with tech support they have been helpful & responsive.

So Ragnarok, I think you're right. It depends on where you live.
