Virginia RoadRunner

Post by slippyman »

For the past few days, I've experienced extreme amounts of lag on my Virginia RoadRunner service, around 4:00 pm - night. From playing DiabloII, I had a ping of atleast 500 but then it fluctuated to an average around 1000+. And other games, my ping was extremely high. Now I haven't experienced this bad lag ever before. The times I usually play in before didn't lag this much, but its outrageous now. Even in the mornings, I still acquired huge pings. So I've been checking with dslreports at their speed checks. Its amazing what I get.

11k down/ 30k up
40k down/ 50k up
2k down/ 9k up
11k down/ 10k up

These are the attributes of my cable.
-rt311 netgear router
-3 hubs
-all optimized for proper speeds
-regular speeds: 350k down/250k up.

I've found it, this wasn't just me. I had several of my other friends who have Roadrunner. And they too, complain of the mass congestion even during the non-peak hours.

Today, a person who talked to another who was a RoadRunner Rep, informed me that Virginia server is currently down, so they re-routed all customers to Chicago's server. A cause of the influx in Virginia RoadRunner cable service? I mean having the Chicago server, handle its own and additional customers from Virginia. Combined would equal mass amounts of lag for poor old us, whose server is supposely down.

Does anyone have any clue to the situation with my RoadRunner service? I doubt its with my cable setup.

I have RoadRunner in new york city and it smokes, fast as hell 250-350kbps downloads, and very low pings, in the 30-50's, sorry to hear of your troubles, I hope they resolve it soon, it sucks to be teased of having cable and getting 56k speeds, cya. :D :D

The thing is that RoadRunner isn't as popular as NYC. As far as I know, we weren't GUARANTEED a speed. It was that you pay every month, for what ever speed you get. Download goes up/down but upload capped at 250kbps. Its really pissing me off, going as fast as a 33.6k modem. And my MSN internet isn't responding either! As far as Virginia not being that popular, the server doesn't compare to what NYC has. I've been to NYC, I couldn't tell really "how" fast everyone claims it is, because my cousin has a 333mhz computer where almost 80% harddrive is filled. So its SLOOWWW. Processing, but Ok internet.

No internet connections comes w/ a throughput guarantee. :)

That test isn't accurate anyway. :)

Have you contacted your provider yet?

I probably will soon, if this keeps up till the end of the week. The last time I had congestion and called them. All they asked us was if the cable indicator was on. I answered yes and they said, "Well its just the service is really congested, and can't really do anything about it." I agree, that we could do anything, and got better days after that.

As for the speed test...I think its pretty accurate. I mean if I compared my gameplay and webpage loading, its GODLY slow! Website loads 1/4 speed than usual, and instead of getting pings of 150-200 around 4:00pm. I receive 400-1000+. That is quite a significane don't you think? If you tried out how the speed of my cable modem, you can realize that its really struggling sending information as fast as before.

And Thank you for clarify that nothing is Guaranteed :D .

Slipperyman they are rerouting us to.Here in ohio. Due to upgradeing of the new Docsis system. I and couple of people I know that are on the docsis sytem have been rerouted to routers that are set up for docsis. Till they finish getting the people who are still on the old system upgrade. and all the routers upgraded. This could very well be your problem to. You might want to call rr server in your area and ask some questions.
GoodLuck! :)

In Richmond VA here. Having the same issues.

I've heard a variety of reasons for the problem. Most resons revolve around bandwidth. Either a router or the lines themselves in Richmond. ATT/RR is not telling anyone in a broadcast e-mail about the issue nor on the website. The techs in JAX, when you call, will give a variety of info about what the problem is. But 'they are working very hard' to correct whatever it is.

An e-mail broadcast received here today gave the usual helpful info about renewing IP, minimizing downtime and a TOS reminder about how prorates are issued. (only when the service is down for 24hrs or more). Nothing about the current issue which the last I read will take months to resolve due to the vendor's inability to provide lines fast enough.

I've been on the service since 01 '00. Been great all year. After the M1/ATT buyout, things began to get strange.

We all understand no speed is guranteed. However, I did not sign on to get dial-up speeds.

If it isn't resolved soon. I mean like in a month...It's kinda worthless for yourself paying 30-40 dollars for speeds worth less than 56k.

I realize you can't do much and neither can the tech support. I guess we have to wait patiently for our servers to be put back up and running again.

Lemme see if I can find anything for you guys....I have RR here in Milwaukee, WI and it works good. Lemme find some network status in Virginia.
EDIT: Could't find anything.
Go to http://help.rr.com and go to the live technical support and explain your problems and they'll give u a ticket and will probably fix it.

This has been discussed on several forums. There is at least one circuit that is overloaded. On one end is 24.93.64.33, and on the other 24.93.64.41. These are routers, not servers. Can't tell where they are or who they belong to because the owner has not registered a name.

Not much you can do except complain. I suggest that you do so, in writing, to the president of your local cable operation. Copy the local cable authority.

Good luck,

Well I just found out from a friend. He called up Roadrunner recently and found out they were setting up 2 OCW3 lines up. And said that it should be done in the next 2 weeks. So it takes around 2-4 weeks to do this?

Very likely. An OC-3 requires a fiber connection and some expensive equipment. 2-4 weeks sounds pretty quick to me.
