You cna put it what ever direction suits you best, however make sure you do not block the air vents on it or it may overheat and become a fire hazard. If it is a WAP then you may want to try various orientations that will suit you best for signal strength.
Yup, won't hurt it, no moving parts, I have a couple setup that way due to space limitations in some office shelves, etc. It does get toasty, just make sure it has room to breath.
