WRT54GX2 Router

Post by wiredless »

I am using a WRT54GX2 (SRX 200) router. For the most part it is an OK router. However, I am having an issue when running in either WPA or WPA2 mode with AES encryption. Some URL's starting with 66.x.x.x (eg gateway.com) will not display, eventually getting the error "page cannot be dispalyed" message. If using WPA or WPA2 with TKIP encryption or WEP, everything displays fine. I am using the latest firmware and I believe (not positive) that's when it started. I am looking for the older firmware to try reflashing, but no luck finding it yet. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about the old firmware, use the very latest then try a factory reset. Hold the reset button in for a total of 90 seconds, the first 30 leave it plugged in, the second 30 unplug it then for the last 30 replug it it. Once it goes through it's boot up process unplug the power once again for 30 seconds, then try resetting your encryption.

Also, what wireless card are you using in your computer?

Thanks but I did not see a reset button like on an older wired router I had. I did go thru setup and selected reset to factory defaults and the router rebooted and cleared all my configurations. Then I unplugged it and plugged it back in and reset the security back to WPA2 and AES, works exactly as before (no access to some web pages with URL's 66.x.x.x) but works fine with WPA2 and TKIP. I'm still skeptical about the firmware revision, because it used to work when I first got the computer in January and I have been using WPA2 and AES since day 1. The only change I can think of is the firmware revison. But I think it's a done deal, the original factory default firmware cannot be obtained. Linksys tech. support suggested trying it, but couldn't tell me where to get it and would not send it to me. Typical Linksys.

Reset button is on a corner...in the back of the unit.

 Yep, you will need a paper clip to push it in.

Then you need to update the drivers for your Intel Wireless 2200, there are many issues with this chipset, I know because I have the same one in my laptop, it is even documented by Intel. The latest drivers are version 9.0.4.13, you can download them from HERE (make sure you disable any power saving issues under the advanced wireless settings), then you need to download Microsoft's WPA2 update found HERE. I also HIGHLY recommend uninstalling Intel's Wireless software and use XP's built in wireless setup, it's easier to use and very stable.

I already installed the latest drivers for the 2200BG (first thing I tried). Good point though. I found the reset hole (thanks - I completely overlooked it) and reset it again that way, although Linksys says that selecting restore factory defaults on the setup page does the same thing (who knows). It still does the same thing after resetting it twice. I guess I can live with WPA2 and TKIP but it gets me that AES doesn't work correctly. If you've got other ideas, I'll try 'em all. Does anyone have this router using WPA(2) with AES and can get to gateway.com? or any other 66.xx.xx.xx site? Again, thanks.
