Help Please!

Post by dbnukes »

If I want to install the following speed patches in what order should they be installed? 1)PPPoE Mtu patch, 2) the Vtcp.386, 3)the web page fast load patch, and then the 4) the @home speed patch.

Thanks!

@Home doesn't use PPPoE, so unless you're on a DSL PPPoE connection, nix the PPPoE patch. Also, I would use the non-PPPoE patch instead of the @Home speed patch.

As for order, I don't think it matters, but I'd install Vtcp.386 first. Note that it is only needed if you run Win98/98se.

Hey GLC, I use Bellsouth DSL, is this a PPPoE connection? It does use a dial up or logon configuration before it connects to the internet. Is this a signal of PPPoE?

Yes, it's a PPPoE DSL connetion, so use the appropriate PPPoE registry patch, the web page patch, and the Vtcp.386 patch, if you're running Win98/98se.

I still don't see why he would need patch for PPPoE when his RWIN will be set to 63888,
not above 65535

First Lobo if it's win98SE it needs it second I'm on DSL I don't tell people to set there Rwin this high but look...
TCP options string = 0204059c0103030301010402

MTU = 1476
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.

MSS = 1436
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1436, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 471712
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 58964
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
505472 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
252736 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126368 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63184 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 18868.48 kbps (2358.56 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 7547.392 kbps (943.424 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 110 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

Plus Speedguide sets 255552 for the Rwin :)

Go download speedguides PPPoE 98 tweak..
open it and look inside yes its set to 255552 do to certain Latency that can occure in PPPoE... FAD no if someone on Mindspring wants to set it that high it will work.. Can't say about the other DSL company's
Normally I run a touch lower not much more though.. I also stream videos well at that size..

heres a sample of my D/L on win2k or win98
Image
This is without the router in place.. with the router I take a 250Kbps hit slower...
I'm at the point of putting my Proxy server back up cause it was faster...

Thats a 1.5Mb down and 256 up subscribed DSL line my normal upload is around 356 to 400

glc1- Some BS customers use PPPoA, especially those with the internal PCI modems, so should he still install the PPPoE patch, or just the regular one?

Most of the PPPoE and PPPoA that use the software to connect will use the PPPoE patch...
I switch or can between PPPoE and PPPoA they both use the same type of wonderful overhead..
so PPPoE patch first Web patch second Vtcp.386 third this will cause the reboot if you use the auto install file...
Back up and running is 5 minutes the most
