Cable Internet Upload Speed Problem

Post by skeets73 »

I've decided to re-write this post since I figured the other post was a bit confusing and I got no responses. Basically what has happened is that I've upgraded Internet services with Rogers from the regular High Speed service to the Extreme service. The Extreme service requires the DOCSIS modem which I purchased for 100 dollars. The reason why I am posting this thread is because my upload is just as slow, if not SLOWER then the regular High Speed Service.

REG HIGH SPEED SERVICE SPECS
Down - 3 mbps
Up - 386kbps

EXTREME HIGH SPEED SERVICE
Down - 5 mbps
Up - 800 kbps

I am only uploading to people, even to people next door to me at 20-40 k when I'm supose to be uploading at around 80-100 k. I used to be uploading fast the first couple of days when I got the service installed but from then on, it's been a total slow down. The download is fine though, not noticing too too much of a decrease of speed there.

Anyway, I've tried rebooting my cable modem, unpluging my router and using my modem and directly connecting it to my computer, I've tried formating my computer and I've done a numerous amount of bandwith tests at dslreports.com and pcpitstop.com and I've been getting horrible upload speed results. What could be causing this problem? My ISP says the connectivity is fine, I honestly don't think they believe that there is a problem with my upload speed (Which Pisses me off!)

Maybe someone could request some settings for my 5 mb down 800kb upload connection for the TCP Optimizer or anything else they might think that could be causing this problem? I hope I can get this issue resolved soon :(

Thanks for reading my thread.

You can only upload as fast as the net traffic, the other persons computer, and other factors allow. All ISP's say in fine print they can't guarantee speeds...Do a few speed tests for upload and see what you hit.. if your up to the speeds you say you should get than thats what you got but those factors I first mentioned might be showing slower...I'm sure others will add more to this and other reasons you might look at.

You're on cable, so if there's lotsa of upstream traffic on your node that could impact.

Proximity has less of an impact that you might think. Your neighbor could have a router, firewall, AV that is slowing things down, all sorts of possibilities.

What protocol are you using to upload? Any crypto?
anything is possible - nothing is free

Hey, my next door neighbour has a router yes, and so do I. I have done multiple tests with my ISP for my modem and connection and everything is good on their end. They are sending a technition to my house tomorrow morning to check the signal and noise levels of my wiring so hopefully they can figure out whats going on. I use FTP to upload and also mIRC's DCC and ICQ.

1. What brand modem do you own?

2. What speed test are you using to test down/up speeds?
(try This

3. If your upload is capped @ 800kbps then you should be able to upload @ ~700-750kbps. This is dependant on 4 things really(not ranked neccessarily in order of importance but close)
A. Ability of the recieving party to accept info as fast as you are sending it.
B. Upstream traffic on your node.
C. Distance between your house and the node.
D. Speed of your PC

If you own a motorola surfboard modem or an Arris modem, I can show you how to check your upstream transmit, downchannel power and signal to noise ratio without calling tech support. :D :thumb:

Arris cm450a Information

Post by p0rkmonster »

I have an Arris cm450a and my upload speed is also pretty awful ( 5mbit down, but only 256kbits ups). Is it true that the speed caps are controlled by a config file from the cable company (maybe TFTP'd to the cable modem?)?

ANy information would be much appreciated.

you can only rely on your ISP to tell you why... again distance might play a factor as well as line quality... again... remember that cable modem is a shared technology.. and the cable companies only allow so much upstream per node.... maybe you have a business on the node that runs a server? dunno what th reason... but you need to address it with the ISP...

The only registry tweak for upload, that i have tested and gives a little boost is this :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters
Make a DWORD and name it: DefaultSendWindow and give the value= 800 x 1024/8 = 102400 (Decimal)

Also cablenut includes that option. Get from here the settings or post for help.
The truth is, in there........!!!
