network disconnecting
hi my network disconnects every like 5 minutes. it is so annoying! i cant take this anymore. i researched this and i found out the xp service could be affecting the connection. "wireless zero configuration." i guess what this does is searches for multiple connections or something and disconnects you sometimes. well i tried turning it off but then i cant connect to the network! either i have to connect it manually somehow, or get a program that automatically connects me just to the one network i choose. im pretty confused about this but i really need some help please. if you have any experience with this, please help me out here. thank you.
What kind of router is it? If you haven't already, go to the manufacturer website and look for a Firmware update and update the router. It could just be a slight glitch in the routers software. Make sure you do the update using a hard wired connection and not a wireless connection.

If it is a wireless connection you should try running the Wireles Network Configuration Wizard. You should be able to enter the information for your network, and choose to connect only to that network, or some option like that. Basically you want to prevent Windows from making a connection to another wireless network in your area.
I agree with the firmware upgrade. Usually with someone's home network that's the first place I look with disconnection and other issues. Check that first and it's there's an upgrade do it and see if that doesn't fix your disconnection issue.
Large increases in cost with questionable increases in performance can be tolerated only in race horses and women.

Yeah that happens a lot especially in the city. So many people leave their router at default name that they connect to someone elses "Default" or "Linksys" a few houses away and the signal keeps droppingErikD wrote:If it is a wireless connection you should try running the Wireles Network Configuration Wizard. Meanwhile there are like 4 "Defaults" and 2 'Linksys" in the list.

This is not an uncommon problem.
The solution of choice is to use the configuration software that comes with your wireless card, disable the MS zero config utility.
I just sold my Gigabyte GN-WPKG wireless card last weekend, it comes with it's own connection management utility called "GN-WPKG Soft AP" .
Anyway, babble aside, that card of mine was picking up signals from 2 neighbors houses. (Darn good card lol, the houses are pretty far apart here)
In the Soft AP there's a selection for setting up Profile and default connection. Once you create a Profile with your network as default, and activate that Profile, it will stay connected to it and not try connecting to other networks as long as your modem is up and running. If your modem goes out, then the utility will try connecting to another network.
You should be able to freely download the utility for your WLAN from your WLAN's manufacturer's website.

We are having a very big problem with a slight disconnection at exactly midnight every night. This has happened since I set up a wireless network at Xmas last year. We have done / altered / re-installed many things but its still not working. Its only the AOL program that shuts off. Internet explorer and MSN Messenger etc stay on. Once AOL says its been disconnected and cannot find a connection, you can then connect back on straight away. Can anyone help me??
