8+5=1 ??

Me and the OPS director were talking and he said 'Hey 8+5=1'...'see if you can figure that out'

Well I've been real busy but I have given it some thought...I just don't see how that would work. I used binary numbers, etc.

Anyone know?

LOL no I'm sure it's some kind of mentally challenging braintwister kinda thing. This guy is extremely smart..used to be work for NASA, etc.
I figure it's one of those 'trick' kinda questions
