1TB Hard Drives

Post by jmw1137 »

Any idea when we might see them? I've seen some posts talking about end of '06 but I'd hope they'll be out sooner than that. Currently the biggest I've seen is 600GB....are they any bigger yet?

Not sure but that is alot of eggs to put in one basket. Id personally rather have a couple smaller ones that equal 1tera. Unless you raid it for redundancy but then you are talking some SERIOUS cash!

I have a mobile DJ business and want to store all my music as WAV so I can encode it to MP3 or any other format I want in the future. Currently I have about 800GB filled...and still have a long ways to go. I would like to get 1.5-2TB for original copy of everything and the same amount for back-up...so essentially about 3-4TB.

Well I've seen usb and firewire based solutions with 1.5 and 2.5 TB in them but for like $3500

Would this 4 TB setup need to be portable?

Nope...actually looking to make them all internal....I'm tired of having externals all over the place. For now I think I'll pick up a few of the biggest internal 7200 RPMs I can get and then will upgrade them when capacities get bigger.

heh, I thought when i bought my 80gig WD-special edition, it was da bomb*.
Even with a Acronis Image partition of my hard drive, i still have 47 gigs spare.
I save alot to DVDRW...too, just in case.

What's the noise level on a drive like that?

I would suggest that you first consider a "lossless" compression format like FLAC or even take the ever slightest hit with mp3 @320. Roughly 6 to 1 will save you a tremendous amount of space and money. If you are DJing parties or affairs, noone will be able to discern the difference. In very coarse numbers, an album is about 100MB compressed. A 120 GB HD should then be able to store 1000 CD's of music. OF course, you may well wish to go with larger drives to store all your tunes, but it is doubt you will need it all for every type of event.

For the most part, I agree - on a higher-end system you can tell mp3 from wav

With high gear, in a proper listening situation, not your average party room.

I don't think you'll see them on store shelves until 2007. Hitachi (which took over IBM's hard drive division) announced there's will be out in 2007. Not sure on other brands...but I'd imagine in similar time.

Agreed with Hell_yes...

Compress with FLAC and you'd save aprox half the space with no loss of quality.

This also gives you the option of later, converting to OGG, MP3, MPC, or whatever your heart desires with no more work than drag and drop..

For the most part, those with high end systems probalby wouldn't use mp3 anway. With mine, I can do A,B tests and what I notice is that most people have not a clue what to listen for as far as artifacts go.

I think in the case of this gent.....David is probalby right. In fact I think the guy could probably get away with using LAME encoded high quality VBR files without anyone noticing. Every mobile DJ system I've ever heard, you could probably get away with a 128 bit encoded file.

I have DJed parties and school radio. Technics turntables, even with top notch Shure cartridges, will not provide epicureans with the ultimate sound. I would suggest that he experiments with bit rates. 320 is what I used for archiving and jukeboxing my CD collection. Of course, the computer sound card will not be an equivalent to a 1300 dollar CD player, but it works very well for casual listening.

Let me add that I recent received an IPod 60GB. With the included headphones, 128 and 320 MP3's sounding equivalent. With my Grado 325 headphones, the difference is apparent. It is surprising just how articulate an IPod (320 MP3) can be with top notch headphones.
