Are some dsl modems faster than others? SBC uses quite a few modems. ARe some faster than others? Are newer ones faster than older models?

None that I've heard of or seen. Most are DMT mode now days and pretty much generic. Only differences seem to be straight Bridge modems and modem/router combos. The modem/router type really through folks for a loop when they put routers behind them. ;)
.

Verizon 3000/768 DHCP DSL:
Download Speed: 2802 kbps (350.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 717 kbps (89.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

For the home user accounts...not much difference between them. For the 6 meg business packages you'll notice SBC uses the Netopia gateways...higher throughput in them.
