mother board or hard drive??

Post by IRS »

here's the problem, I set my old comp up as a mass storage unit to keep my gaming rig free of every thing but game related goodies, and a few days ago I went to boot it up and I got a fatal HD error.
So I grab one of my other HD's pop it in bios picks it up so I install xp home it gets to the point in it's install reboot thing and I get the same fatal HD error.
Now just to try something different I go and download knoppmyth and burn the iso, it formats and loads everything gets to the reboot part and I get a HD error.

I would think it's the mother board in a sec but it never misses a beat on the install and it has me stumped.... any ideas??

Replace the cable. If it stills does it, try another IDE controller, surely there is another one on the board. If that fails as well, bad motherboard.

No overclock on this one.

just tried a different cable and a different controller, no luck

reset cmos on mobo yet?
haven't tried this yet, I took it for granted that if the bios saw the hard drive then there was no need to reset the cmos, I will give it a shot

Thanks for the ideas, I will give it a bit more work befor I repalce the mobo, I hate to see it go
