Ghosting

Post by jim1133 »

I complained to Verizon about slow throughput. They e-mailed me saying it can be resolved by "ghosting" my MacPoET. They then give me about 20 things to do, but it looks like an uninstall and reinstall of their software. Has anyone heard of ghosting?

What were the things that they asked you to do? I've heard of and often do what's called "ghosting", but when we in the computer industry use that term, it's usually having to do with disk imaging, because of a populare software package called "Ghost" in which you make the replicated hard drive images with.

Well ghosting can also mean device drivers that are installed in windows that are not attacted to a device or have two or more drivers attacted to a device that really only needs one. What makes it ghosted is that these drivers don't show up in regular mode only in safe mode, the best way to look for ghosted drivers is to go to safe mode and go to drive

I'll just post a few lines at the start of the "ghosting" e-mail.

The problem in which you describe may be resolved by "ghosting" your MacPoET
and TCP/IP settings. In order to do this ensures that you have your Verizon
Online CD-ROM (Release 2.0), or the downloaded release 2.0 of the connection
software. (The actual MacPoET version is 1.1).

Jimm it sounds like they just meant it as re-installing over on top of itself, which is some methods used to often "heal" software that is acting up.
