Moreover you should be saying "Don't buy the Linksys Cable/DSL Gateway Router".

I have the Netgear RT311 which I upgraded my original purchase of the Linksys Router for.

I've never been happier.

However I have all Linksys network card in my Computer PCI slots and PCMCIA cardbus slot in my Laptop.
As well I have a Linksys 5 port 10/100 switch and another 16 port Linksys 10/100 switch feeding my Internet throughtout the house wherever I want to take my laptop or configure a friends computer up.

So Linksys products work well. But their Cable DSL Gateway Router has been plagued by many problems over the past year !!!
RCA Cable Modem 225 - BEFSR41 Linksys router - DLINK USB 2.0 10/100 NIC - Linksys 10/100 16 port and 5 port Switches - Pentium PIV 2.0A CPU with a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ Copper Heatsink/Fan combo - 512 MB PC800 Rambus RAM - Intel D850MV motherboard - 240GB hard drive space, 2ea 40GB and 2ea 80GB as a 160GB ATA 133 Raid drive using a Promise TX2000 PCI Raid Controller, Just bought a Maxtor 160 GB 8mb buffer drive to add for more video editing - Buslink (oem Ricoh MP5125a) RW5125a DVD+RW/+R Burner and TDK 24x10x40x CDRW drives - ATI 64MB DDR All In Wonder Radeon-8500-DV with excellent MPEG2 Capture, TV, and Playback Accelerator Video Card - Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Audio with 4.1 Altec Lansing surround speakers - Enermax EG465P-VE (430 watt) Whisper Quiet Power Supply - Viewsonic VA800 17.4 Inch LCD Display (equivalent in size to a 19 inch Flat Screen CRT display) - Windows XP Pro (registered and activated) - Comcast cable service with 1.8mbit down / 256kbit up.

Yeah, the router is the problem, not the switch, which I also have. Their NICs are questionable too, though.

The NIC's aren't that bad with the exemption of the original 1.0 PCI versions. What happens is most people don't bother to get the correct drivers. EG: for the standard LNETX100 there are !SIX! different driver sets. Linksys should have really named their cards differently with each generation.

Back when I was building systems, there was three or four driver sets b/c of three or four revisions. Also, some motherboards insisted that the WOL cable was NOT connected. :)

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've installed probably a dozen Linksys cable routers for people with no problems at all, with one exception; a 3Com NIC's ability to configure on the Linky. I've installed two of their wireless access points, and about six wireless PC cards. One site has several hubs as well. No problem with any of them. I use a single port BEFSR11 here at my office, as well as 8-port switch, and a wireless.

For the average surfer/user, their set up is quick and easy. I can understand gamers complaints with some interactive games- can't speak about that as I don't use 'em. But they seem like a pretty good bang for the buck to me.

The interface is simple to use, and to me, easy to understand.

Their documentation on the other hand, sucks.

Like I said, I guess I've been lucky.

Yeah I just love leaksys support..
Or lack of..
There interface is harder than some of the others but then I guess if all you do is surf then I guess a leaksys is ok...
It couldnt handle my server
ftp
email
http
file
kept burpin personally I cant afford to have my customers calling me to tell them its a router problem and there is nothing I can do about it other than to replace it with a better product...

I have to agree, no problems. I've had it now for about 4 months and the home network is awesome. I don't use it for gaming or other online extra's.
I have cable and a 4 Pc network in the home, I did not feel like purchasing multiple IP's from my isp so I went with the Linksys. Very easy to set-up and maintain, basically set-it and forget-it! I don't think the Linksys was intended for every user, I purchased this router to match all of my needs and I'm very satisfied.

Remember that what is good for the Goose is not always good for the gander.
