Building A New System

Post by chugger93 »

I havnt been keeping up with hardware lately, and my friend wants a computer built for him. He wants to play some fairly top end games, do email, internet, etc. So he'll need a pretty decent system.

Can someone recommend some ASUS motherboards with chips? I want to do a P4, but I keep seeing Pentium 4 - Skt 478 & Pentium 4 - Skt T , specially on zipzoomfly.com where I want to buy my board, chip & memory. Whats the difference? I know SKT 478 is socket based chip, but whats Skt T?

His budget is about $1,500, but I want to take some of that for building it for him. He already told me too.

Any help would be appreciated. Probably get him an Nvidia FX card too.

Skt T is the LGA775 chip. I have the 3.4Ghz version and it runs WARM! I replaced the stock heatsink and fan with this and now it runs in the low to mid 30 degree C range.

Here's an explanation of the LGA775 vs. Socket 478.

Good luck. I built a really nice system back in February for $1200.

if he wants to play games, then he will want an AMD system, more bang for the buck that way.

Mark, if you had $500 for just a processor & Mobo, what would you purchase with it?

I would like to move to an AMD system by Christmas time....new job starts in a couple weeks and I'll be able to afford the setup.

Only problem with that MOBO is it doesn't like CHEAP ram.. that sucker will only run with top notch stuff so that will cost him more too.
