Any aquarium owners out there?
I just finished the cycle on my second 40 gallon tan tank. It has 10 tiger barbs and one red tail shark. However it is still very empty. My original tank is loaded with community tropical fish.
Any recommendations as to what fish (fishes) to put in there? (tropical).

From what I know, those are "semi" aggressive fish.. you put any basics in like guppies or mollies in and you'll just be feeding them... they love to fin nip...Subsane wrote:I just finished the cycle on my second 40 gallon tan tank. Good choices - Blue Gouramis and Rosy Barbs...
Bad Choices - Fish that cannot defend themselves too well unless you want live food for your fish. Ex - Bettas - While VERY aggressive and could possibly kill 1 tiger barb alone.. your 10 would kill the betta fast as he cannot move as fast as they can..
NICE setup just be careful with whatever you add.. your red fin solo should be fine no matter what.. but your Barbs could attack anything that it feels would be a threat.

I had the tiger barbs in with some of the community fish at one point and they seemed to keep to themselves as long as they were in a large group. But you are right, they are definately nippers and I am proceeding with caution.SpareX wrote:From what I know, those are "semi" aggressive fish.. you put any basics in like guppies or mollies in and you'll just be feeding them... they love to fin nip...

lol I got.. A Betta.. Crimson Red.. he's in a 2.5gallon tank on my desk at home.. got a move commin up so I've not had time to do water changes properly latly. (Bad Daddy!
)
When he passes on I plan on getting a small reptile or something till I get my own place and can get a bigger 10-20Gal aquarium. gonna do a big Tropical setup toss in a fish condo setup for some bettas cause I love how they look, toss some other pretty fish in the regular area and have a nice small setup..

I'm using my 10 gallon tank for breeding (fish). Haven'y had the chance though because I grabbed a handfull of gravel from my cycled tanked and dumped it in the 10 gallon tank to speed up the cycle process. Turns out I must have grabbed an egg and it actually hatched! Now I'm waiting for the little fry to get large enough to put in one of the main tanks.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the little guy swimming around in there even though I have never put any fish into that tank...

I got a 70 gallon fresh water tropical tank, its pretty much filled with red tiger oscars a Jack Dempsey, three pelcos and a barbed catfish. Tiger barbs should do ok with one or two Raphael Catfish. the Raphaels are pretty easy going and are hidden most of the day, but when they come out you can see how active they get. heres what they look like...

lol, it suprised me the first time I got him in a net, he was buzzing and clicking like mad, I have never heard a fish make such sounds, whitch makes him unique. But anyhoo, He got along great with my tiger oscars at full length (12") and when they we're babys (1.5"). Hes made an awesome addition to my tank community.

What kind on filtration do you have? If you've got an undergravel filter that will help a good bit, but IMO it won't do much good with any other types. The bacteria will just die off without the constant flow of aerated water through the gravel.
Pretty neat about that baby fish
Lots of good advice offered already. Tiger barbs are pretty aggressive when you've only got a few, but with 10 you've got a group that should be a lot calmer. Just steer away from anything small that they might see as food or fish with really long fins that the barbs might nip, liek angelfish.I just finished the cycle on my second 40 gallon tan tank. Like spareX mentioned, other barbs or gouramis would be good.
A few scavengers help any tank...plecos do great almost anywhere, just make sure to get dwarf or butterfly or bushynose, something that'll stay small. Standard ones will outgrow a 40 in a few years. Cory cats would do fine, just make sure you have enough to keep each other company as they're pretty gregarious fish. Big tetras would be ok, like penguins or emperor. Maybe a couple loaches. Rams or other dwarf cichlids as long as they had good rock cover.
I just moved a pair of Dempseys from my living room 40 into a 55 out in my shop (one of 3 setups right now).
Brought the fish in the shop into the living room.
It's a bit crowded but I've got a Penguin 330 on it and do lots of water changes. Just set it up with a 65 watt CoralLife AquaLamp and some nice live plants. Helps to work at a pet supply store
3 gold severums
4 mature keyhole cichlids, 4 juveniles
5 black neon tetras
1 red-tailed shark
1 bushynose pleco
2 dwarf clown plecos
2 albino cory cats
4 yoyo loaches
Wouldn't recommend balas unless you plan on getting a much bigger tank later, they can get damn big eventually.

I have a sponge filter in the 10 gallon. The 40 gallon tanks each have p3nguin 330 filters (gotta love those dual bio-wheels).Humboldt wrote:What kind on filtration do you have? I also have 1 pleco in each tank (plecos are my fav).
I like the idea of putting guramis in the tank with the barbs!
As far as the Balas go, I do plan on getting a 120 gallon by next year.
